Melody Summers remembered the police report from back then. It said a group of workers from the back hills had gone mad from gambling. After losing all their wages, they had set their sights on the government’s supplies.
The report also included a list of the criminals involved in the robbery, and Saul Archer was on it. Melody had a vivid memory of him because of his disabled hand.
The time and the person matched. Saul Archer’s unusual behavior today suddenly made perfect sense—his gang was probably preparing to rob the government supplies, but he didn’t want to be a part of it, so he was planning to skip town beforehand!
Although she didn’t know why Saul Archer had made a different choice in this life, one thing was certain—someone was about to stir up trouble again!
Except...
Melody Summers had always thought the supply robbery was just a crime of impulse, committed by a group of gamblers who had lost their minds. But seeing Saul Archer’s reaction today, she was afraid there was more to the story...
At this thought, her gaze went vacant. She muttered, "Conspiracies, conspiracies, always another conspiracy. I’m so sick of it... The apocalypse is bad enough. Can’t everyone just focus on surviving...?"
Too much had happened this morning. Melody Summers felt mentally and physically exhausted and barely ate a few bites of her lunch.
Seeing Melody looking as if she couldn’t stomach her food, her grandmother asked with concern, "Why are you eating so little? Is the food not to your liking today?"
Melody Summers quickly shook her head and replied, "The food is delicious. I’m just a little tired today and don’t have much of an appetite."
Hearing this, Grace said with a look of deep concern, "No appetite? Are you feeling unwell? I heard a lot of people have been suffering from vomiting and diarrhea lately. You’re not sick too, are you? Do you need to go to the hospital?"
Miss Lowell, who was nearby, added worriedly, "The period after a flood is a peak time for infectious diseases. If you’re not feeling well, we should go to the hospital early. Don’t put it off."
Her family all looked at her with concern and anxiety. Melody could only reassure them again and again that she wasn’t sick and felt perfectly fine. To ease their worries, she forced herself to eat another large bowl of rice.
After finally managing to soothe her family, Melody recalled what Grace had said about many people suffering from vomiting and diarrhea. Clutching her now-stuffed stomach, she took out her phone and opened her chat app, wanting to see what was going on.
But as soon as she opened the group chat, she saw that they were discussing Elaine Hughes’s death.
"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: I’m scared to death! Scared to death! Someone else jumped from our building today!"
"2-1408 Bella Grant: @4-1009 Lowell On Deadline Sigh, it’s not even surprising anymore. Someone jumps every day lately."
"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: @2-1408 Bella Grant The problem is, this person landed right in front of me! She almost hit me! It scared me half to death!"
"12-1803 AAA Lawson Building Supplies - Closed: @4-1009 Lowell On Deadline That *is* scary. They must have done it on purpose, right? Since they didn’t want to live, they decided to take someone else with them? So selfish!"
"5-801 Lil Howell: @12-1803 AAA Lawson Building Supplies - Closed Hey, the person’s dead. Speak no ill of the dead. Just leave it."
"12-1803 AAA Lawson Building Supplies - Closed: @5-801 Lil Howell What, feeling compassionate? So many people have jumped lately. You won’t be able to feel sorry for all of them."
