Roman Rhodes’s suspicion was understandable. After all, when someone falls to their death while clutching something, it looks for all the world like the victim is using their last ounce of strength to identify their killer.
But Melody Summers couldn’t be bothered with that. She was already having a bad enough day, and now one annoyance after another was piling up.
Hearing this, Roman Rhodes shook his head, a hint of resignation in his expression. "That’s not what I meant. I believe you wouldn’t do something like that. But since you have a feud with the Lancasters, you shouldn’t get too close to these people. You don’t want to get dragged into it if something goes wrong."
Seeing the dark look on Melody Summers’s face, Roman Rhodes paused for a moment before patiently explaining, "I’ll be honest with you. Elaine Hughes has a half-sister in Kyodo, Cindy Hughes. They share the same father. And now, she’s come to Anworth."
"Cindy Hughes’s husband, Hayden Jennings, is a researcher in the medical field who’s highly regarded by the authorities. He knows his wife’s sister is dead and has demanded the police department conduct a thorough investigation."
"If these people find out you’re connected to Elaine Hughes’s death and decide to come after you, what will you do?"
"I remember telling you many times not to be impulsive and, more importantly, not to put yourself in danger. But you never seem to listen..."
Melody Summers frowned at Roman Rhodes without a word. At that moment, her mind was in turmoil—
’Elaine Hughes’s sister?’
’Cindy Hughes?’
’Where did she pop up from?’
’Did this person exist in my past life?’
’Why don’t I have any memory of her at all?’
Seeing Melody Summers remain silent, Roman Rhodes softened his tone and continued his plea. "Even if you don’t care about yourself, won’t you think about your family? Your mother only has you. If something were to happen to you, what would she do?"
When Roman Rhodes brought up Winnie Summers, Melody Summers suddenly spoke up. "You don’t need to concern yourself with my mother’s affairs, Officer Rhodes."
Melody Summers looked at Roman Rhodes and said pointedly, "I heard a certain Ms. Kylie Walsh has an engagement with you, Officer Rhodes. These high-society arranged marriages aren’t something we common folk can get involved in. You should be more mindful of propriety, Officer Rhodes, and not get too close to my mother. You wouldn’t want to give people the wrong idea."
Roman Rhodes’s usually calm and composed expression suddenly cracked. He sounded a little frantic as he said, "Who’s been feeding you this nonsense? What engagement? I barely even know Kylie Walsh!"
Before Melody Summers could reply, Winnie Summers’s voice came from behind them. "What are you two doing out here? Dinner’s ready. Come and eat."
Sensing the tense atmosphere between Melody Summers and Roman Rhodes, Winnie Summers faltered for a second, then asked quizzically, "What’s wrong with you two? Did something happen?"
Melody Summers’s face was grim, and she didn’t say a word. Roman Rhodes gave Winnie Summers a small, reassuring smile. "It’s nothing. The kid here gave us a clue, and I was just confirming it with her."
Winnie Summers didn’t press further after hearing his explanation. She put an arm around Melody Summers and said to them both, "Let’s eat first. Everything else can wait until after dinner."
As much as Roman Rhodes wanted to stay and spend more time with Winnie Summers, he figured that if he did, Melody Summers probably wouldn’t be able to stomach her food.
He sighed inwardly with resignation and said softly to Winnie Summers, "Unfortunately, I can’t stay for dinner tonight. Something suddenly came up at the station, so I have to head back."
After speaking, Roman Rhodes nonchalantly placed the plastic square he was holding onto a nearby cabinet. He bid them farewell and turned to leave.
Winnie Summers started to see Roman Rhodes out, but she had only taken two steps before Melody Summers grabbed her arm.
Meeting Winnie Summers’s confused gaze, Melody Summers asked softly, "Mom... is Officer Rhodes pursuing you?"
