I stared at the small glass vial in my palm, turning it over in the moonlight. The liquid inside swirled with golden flecks, catching the glow of the full moon. I had no idea what it was, but Natalia had dropped it when she fled from me.

“Andrei?” Lilith’s voice pulled me from my thoughts as she wrapped her arms around my waist. “What are you looking at?”

I flinched at Lilith’s sudden arrival. Did she scent Natalia on me, I wondered? Did she know what we had done together in the shadows?

But when I glanced down at her, her face seemed neutral, and I let out a small breath of relief.

Shaking my head, I slipped the vial into my pocket, then looked up just as Damon dragged Natalia away. She looked back at me once, her eyes glowing with her wolf’s strength, before she and my brother disappeared.

Dammit.

The full moon always made it difficult to keep a distance from my fated mate, but this time was worse than usual. Perhaps because I’d gotten so close to marking her. To completing our bond.

As if it wasn’t bad enough that I’d slept with her once after the banquet, then fucked her again, up against that tree just now.

“Come on,” I said, taking Lilith’s hand. “Let’s go home.”

Sleep evaded me that night. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Natalia’s face, felt her body against mine, heard the delicious little moan she’d made when I thrust into her. My wolf was furious that we hadn’t finished it. Furious that I hadn’t marked her when I should have years and years ago.

As soon as dawn broke, my Beta returned with the vial in hand. I’d given it to him for testing last night; something about it had set me off. I wasn’t entirely sure why I felt so compelled, but I just needed to know what the contents were.

“It’s a contraceptive, Alpha,” he said, handing me the test results. “A strong one, from the looks of it.”

I snatched the results and scanned them, frowning as they confirmed his claims. Natalia was taking a contraceptive.

Was she sleeping with Damon regularly after all? Or was she afraid of getting pregnant with my children during our affair?

I needed answers. And I knew I wouldn’t get them by asking Natalia directly. She’d just deny everything, as she always did.

I needed to see for myself. Maybe someone around the Ashmoor pack house would have answers.

After breakfast, I made my way to the Ashmoor pack house under the pretense of checking on my warriors. The place seemed unusually quiet as I pulled up, parking my car a little way down the road to avoid being noticed. I just wanted to slip in, ask a few questions, maybe snoop around a little if I could.

But as I approached on foot, I spotted movement by the main entrance. Natalia and Damon were loading bags into a car in a hurry.

Where could they be going in such a rush?

Curious, I retreated to my car, waiting until they pulled out of the driveway before following at a safe distance. I wasn’t sure where they were going, but something told me it was important.

They drove for nearly two hours, heading deep into the neutral territory between our packs. Finally, they turned onto a narrow gravel road that wound through the forest. I parked on the main road and continued in wolf form, keeping to the shadows of the trees.

The road led to a small cottage, quaint and isolated.
