The rogues I’d paid to eliminate Natalia had failed. Again. Not only had they failed, but their leader was dead now, the rest had scattered, and Natalia was back home safe and sound.

All thanks to Andrei.

He had dropped everything to search for her. For three days, he had torn through the forest like a madman, barely eating or sleeping until he found her.

He’d saved her. Like some kind of fucking knight in shining armor.

Andrei was falling for her again, and there wasn’t a damn thing I could do to stop it.

I grabbed my purse and keys, heading for the door. The fertility clinic was a thirty–minute drive, but I made it in twenty with my foot pressing down on the gas pedal the entire way. The doctor looked up in surprise when I burst into her office without an appointment.

“Luna Lilith? What are you doing here? Your next treatment isn’t scheduled for another-”

“I want to start now,” I interrupted. “Today. Right now.”

The doctor blinked, setting down her coffee cup. “I’m sorry what?”

“The artificial insemination. I want it done today.”

“Luna, we discussed this. Your hormone levels aren’t quite where we need them to be yet. It would be risky to-

“I don’t care about the risk.” I slammed a wad of cash onto her desk with a grimace. “I need this done now.”

The doctor stared at the money. She was quiet for a moment, then pulled up my file on her computer. “Let me run some tests first to check your levels. If they’re borderline acceptable, we might be able to proceed, but I can’t make any promises.”

An hour later, I was lying on the examination table, staring at the ceiling as the doctor prepared the equipment. My hormone levels were low, but not impossible to work with.

“The success rate will be lower,” she warned me as she positioned the speculum. “Maybe forty percent instead of seventy. And there’s a higher risk of miscarriage in the first trimester.”

“I understand.”

“Are you sure you want to proceed?”

“Just do it.”

The procedure itself was quick and painless. Within twenty minutes, it was over, and I was lying there with my legs elevated, waiting for the sperm to do its job.

Please, I thought desperately. Please let this work.

The next few weeks crawled by. I obsessed over every sensation in my body–was that nausea morning sickness or just nerves? Were my breasts tender, or was I imagining it.

When three weeks had passed, I couldn’t wait any longer. Irove to the pharmacy and bought a pregnancy test. The cashier’s eyes widened as I brought it up to the counter “Congratulations, Luna-”

I stuffed an extra ten dollars in her hand before she could finish and snatched the box away, shoving it in my purse. “Don’t say a word to anyone,” I commanded, then turned on my heel and stormed out.

Back home, I locked myself in the bathroom and took a deep breath. This was it. This would determine everything.

I took the test and set it on the counter, then forced myself to wait the full three minutes without looking. Those were the longest three minutes of my life.
