Chapter 158

Feigning thirst, I made my way to the kitchen, where I found one of the pack servants cleaning dishes. She was young, maybe early twenties. Young enough and low enough of a rank to betray her superiors‘ confidence for a little cash.

“Excuse me,” I said.

She jumped, dropping a plate back into the soapy water, and spun around to face me. Her eyes went wide when she saw me standing there. “Alpha Andrei! I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you come in.”

“It’s fine. I was hoping you could help me with something.”

Her gaze darted around for a moment, but she nodded. “Of course. What do you need?”

I pulled out my wallet and set a fifty–dollar bill on the counter. Her gaze fixed on it immediately.

“I’m curious about the pack’s history,” I said quietly. “Specifically about Luna Natalia and Alpha Damon’s relationship.”

The girl’s face went red. “I… I don’t think I should-”

I added another fifty to the pile. “Nothing too personal. Just general information.”

She stared at the money, then glanced toward the door over my shoulder. But she didn’t run away. “What kind of information?”

“When did they get married? Was there a ceremony?”

“Well…” She picked up the bills, folding them quickly and shoving them into her apron pocket. “There wasn’t really a ceremony. Not a public one, anyway.”

Another fifty. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, one day Grace was supposed to be the Luna, and then suddenly she wasn’t, and Natalia took her place.” The girl lowered her voice to a whisper. “Grace was supposed to be Luna. Everyone knew Alpha Damon was going to mate with her eventually.”

My stomach dropped. “Grace? The nanny?”

The maid glanced at my wallet. I clenched my jaw and handed her the remaining cash I had on me, which was a few hundred. She snatched it and stuffed it into her apron pocket with the other bills.

“She’s not really a nanny. She’s from a good family, and was being groomed to take over as Luna. She used to work in the infirmary as a healer. But then…” The girl shrugged. “Luna Natalia became Luna and Grace had to watch from the sidelines. She didn’t look happy about it at first, although I think she’s come to terms with it.”

“Come to terms with it?”

“Well, lately Grace and Natalia have been getting closer. There are rumors that Natalia is letting Damon and Grace be in love in secret, so Grace is happy. But some of us wonder if Damon and Natalia even really got married at all. Natalia hasn’t been marked by him and they sleep in separate rooms.” She glanced around nervously again. Please don’t tell anyone I said that.”

I nodded absently, my mind already elsewhere. “Of course. Thank you.”

With a nod, the maid scurried away, leaving me alone with this new information.

So there was no public wedding. Grace was supposed to be Luna but was now the nanny. Natalia had taken her place. Natalia wasn’t marked, and she and Damon slept in separate rooms.

And then there were Jane’s innocent comments: Max didn’t want his mom to get married. Damon and Natalia were just friends.
