Jane was sitting up in the hospital bed, thank the Goddess. I couldn’t stop looking at her. I wanted to study every line of her face until I could draw it with my eyes closed.

“Mommy, when is Daddy coming back?”

“Uncle Damon is-”

“No, I mean the man who saved me,” she clarified. “My daddy. When is he coming back to see if I’m okay?”

My chest tightened. “Jane, honey, that was Uncle Andrei. He’s not your daddy.”

She tilted her head. “No, he’s my daddy. And he’s my hero.”

Dammit, I thought. Jane and Max had always suspected Andrei was their real father, and there was certainly no hiding it now. Not after Andrei had saved her life tonight. She would always look up to him from now on, would always feel the connection they shared.

I glanced over at Max, who was curled up in the chair beside the bed. He’d been unusually quiet since we’d arrived at the hospital, but now he was watching our conversation.

“What do you think, Max?” I asked.

He shrugged, but there was something different in his expression. Less hostile than usual. “I don’t think he’s so bad anymore. If he saved Jane.”

The words hit me harder than I’d expected. Max, who had been adamantly against Andrei from the beginning, was actually softening toward him. All because Andrei had risked his life for Jane.

Before I could figure out how to respond to that, Damon strode in wearing clean and dry clothes that the hospital staff had given him. I gritted my teeth and looked away, still too angry to look at him for too long.

“How is everyone doing?” he asked hesitantly, placing a hand on my shoulder. I stiffened, but I didn’t pull away. “Uncle Damon!” Jane beamed, looking nothing at all like a girl

Who had nearly died two hours ago. “Did you see how my daddy saved me from the water? I felt myself sinking, but then I saw him coming toward me, and even when I started to fall asleep, I knew I would be okay because he was there.”

Damon hesitated, and I finally glanced at him and simply shrugged. There was nothing more for us to do now; Jane already saw Andrei as a god because of what had happened, and her brother was basically backing her up.

“I saw,” he said quietly after a moment. “That was very brave of him.”

“I want to call him Daddy from now on,” Jane announced. “Is that okay?”

Damon sighed and sat on the edge of the bed. “Well, sweetheart, that’s something you’ll have to discuss with your

mom.”

Jane turned those expectant green eyes on me. “Please, Mommy? Please can I call him Daddy?”

I felt trapped. There were so many questions swirling around my mind after last night. Of course I wanted the twins to know Andrei as their father. Of course I wanted us to be a family. But I was still running on a hunch about whether or not to fully trust Andrei. And now Lilith was pregnant…

“We’ll see,” I finally said. “Right now, you need to focus on getting better.”
