“Yes!” Jane said immediately. “I’ve wanted to call him Daddy since the first day I met him.”

“Max?” I asked, looking at my son. “It’s your decision to.”

For a long moment, Max was silent, just staring at his lap. But then, to my surprise, he nodded in agreement Yeah. I think it would be nice.”

I felt tears prick the backs of my eyes, hot and stinging. Wordlessly, I gathered both twins up into my arms and kissed the tops of their heads, inhaling their sweet scents.

Suddenly, the front door slammed open so hard it practically rattled the entire house. Heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway, and a moment later, Andrei appeared in the doorway.

I’d never seen him look so dangerous. His green eyes were blazing, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. He was still wearing yesterday’s clothes, wrinkled and slightly damp, like he hadn’t slept at all.

“Go to your room,” I said quickly to the twins, my heart pounding, “Both of you. Now,”

“But-“Jane started.

“Now,” I repeated firmly. They scrambled off the couch and hurried toward the stairs. Once they were gone, I turned back to Andrei. “What’s wrong?”

“You lied to me.” His words were quiet, deadly. “About everything.”

“Andrei-”

“Five fucking years, Natalia.” He pulled a crumpled piece of paper from his pocket and threw it at me. It fluttered to the floor between us. “Five years you kept my children from me.”

I stared down at the paper, my blood turning to ice. It was a DNA test. The results were clear as day: 99.99% probability of paternity.

“How did you-“I started, but he cut me off.

“I had the doctor at the hospital test Jane’s blood last night. And now I know Jane and Max are mine. I know you lied about the miscarriage, lied about the abortion, lied about everything.” His voice was rising with each word.” And I know you’re not really married to my brother either.”

Fury washed over me. “You had no right to test my daughter’s blood without my permission.”

“My daughter,” he corrected sharply. “And I had every right. They’re my children too, whether you wanted to acknowledge it or not.”

“I was protecting them.”

“From what? From me?” He laughed bitterly. “From their own father?”

“Yes!” The word exploded out of me. “From you and your vindictive bullshit and your need to control everything around you!”
