“And?”
“While I was searching, I came across these preliminary custody documents.” She reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a small folded–up bundle of paper, which she handed it to me. “Someone had been laying groundwork to establish paternal rights, and the timing matched when you found out about the twins”
My jaw clenched as I unfolded the paperwork and studied it. The more I read, the more my eyebrows rose.
The documents were definitely about establishing paternal rights and custody arrangements. But I had never filed these. I never had any intention of taking the children.
In fact…
Frowning, I pulled the business card the doctor had given me out of my pocket. My stomach dropped as i realized that the logo on the card and the one at the top of the paperwork were the exact same.
Filing that information away for later, I set the papers down and stared at Mila. “So not only did you snoop, but you led Natalia to believe I was trying to take her children based on documents that have nothing to do with me.
“I thought-”
“You thought wrong.” My Alpha power flared again, making her flinch. “Your incompetence nearly destroyed my relationship with my children and their mother.”
Mila looked like she was about to cry, but I wasn’t finished with her yet. Something in her posture and the way her eyes kept darting around told me she was still hiding something.
“What else?” I demanded.
“What?”
“Don’t lie to me. There’s something else you’re not telling me. What is it?”
She shook her head quickly. “Nothing, Alpha. That’s everything.”
I stood up and moved around the desk, letting my full Alpha presence wash over her. “What. Else.”
The command was irresistible. Mila’s hands were shaking as she reached back into her jacket pocket and pulled out another document. This one was older and more worn, with handwritten words instead of typed ones.”
“I found this too,” she whispered. “It’s about Natalia’s car accident. The one from five years ago.‘
I took the paper from her trembling hands. It was a letter, written in handwriting I didn’t recognize. The content made my blood run cold.
“The problem needs to be eliminated permanently. Make it look like an accident. Payment will be delivered as discussed.”
“Where did you find this?”
“In some old files in the attic. I almost threw it away, but then I saw it mentioned a car accident and… I thought
might be connected.”

I read the letter again, my mind racing. Someone had definitely tried to have Natalia killed all those years ago.
Was that why she had been hiding from me? Because she thought it was me?
Natalia
I woke up to someone pounding on my front door like they were trying to break it down. Groaning, I rolled over and checked the clock. It was just past six in the morning. Who the hell was beating down my door at six in the morning?
