Chapter 194

Footsteps pounded down the steps. Damon came barreling into the room with Grace on his heels, took one look at the scene, and both of them immediately went pale. Grace jumped into action and raced over, falling to her knees and checking Andrei’s pulse.

What happened?Damon demanded, but I couldn’t answer. Couldn’t explain that I’d nearly killed an innocent man because I was too scared and paranoid to see the truth.

More people arrived. Pack members, drawn by my screams. Someone brought towels to help with the bleeding. Someone else cleared a path for the medical team when they arrived.

But none of it mattered. Andrei’s eyes had closed, his breathing was growing more shallow by the moment, and the pool of blood beneath him kept getting bigger.

They loaded him onto a stretcher and rushed him to the infirmary. I followed, still wearing my bloodsoaked robe, my hands stained red with the blood of the man I’d sworn was trying to kill me.

The man who had just been trying to hug me.

The man I’d nearly murdered.

Hours passed. Andrei was rushed into the surgical ward of the Ashmoor infirmary, where he remained until well after breakfast time. I sent Damon to stay with the twins. Meanwhile, I couldn’t move. Couldn’t tear my eyes away from the door that Andrei’s limp body had disappeared through.

I couldn’t believe what I had done. In those moments, I had really thought he was trying to kill meit was as if I was back there, back in the forest surrounded by the rogues who had tried to finish the job all those years ago when I survived the car crash.

Or perhaps I was still behind the wheel of that car, watching the metallic shape of that wolf’s head getting closer and closer in the rearview mirror.

The weightlessness, the hollowness in my stomach as I’d careened over the edge of that cliff and plunged into icy water

The desperation. The fear. The horror.

All of it had come rushing back at the worst time, and I had hurt Andrei dearly because I was too much of a paranoid fucking coward to let him in.

Suddenly, a hand on my shoulder jolted me awake. I hadn’t realized I’d fallen asleep, but I was immediately alert, leaping to my feet.

How is he?I blurted out.

Stable, but barely.Grace was standing in front of me with a grim expression on her face. He lost a lot of blood. The knife missed his heart by inches, but it nicked an artery. We’ve repaired the damage, but

But what?

Grace hesitated, then sighed and gestured for me to follow her. I slumped behind her, barely able to keep myself

Only one bed was occupied this morning.

He’s not responding the way he should,Grace whispered as we approached. His wolf is too weak to begin proper healing. Normally in cases like this, we’d expect to see some improvement by now, but he’s not getting better.

We stopped in front of his bed, and I made a little sound of distress, clamping my hand over my mouth. Andrei’s golden skin looked so pale, his cheeks so hollow. He didn’t look like himself at all.

He looked like a ghost, wrapped up in white sheets, laying unmoving in bed.

There is one thing that might help.Grace shot me a sideways glance. Mate bonds can be powerful healing tools. If his mate were toto kiss him, it might give his wolf the strength it needs to recover properly.
