Chapter 197

I carefully straddled Andrei, mindful of his injury but unable to resist the pull between us any longer. His hands immediately found my hips, fingers pressing gently into the soft flesh there, anchoring me to him like he was afraid I might disappear again.
Heat swept through me just at that singular touch, and I found myself leaning forward.
My hair fell forward as I leaned closer, creating a curtain around us in the silvery moonlight. Andrei reached up with one hand, tangling his fingers through the long strands and lifting them to his nose. He breathed in deeply, his eyes fluttering closed for a moment.
“I always loved the smell of your hair,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble. “The color of it. Like a polished chestnut in the sunlight.”
Warmth flooded my cheeks at his words, further intensifying the pressure that had begun to build in my low belly. “I always thought I looked too much like Lilith for my own good. Same hair, same eyes…”
“No.” Andrei’s response was immediate and firm. His hand moved to cup my face, thumb stroking along my cheekbone. “You’re nothing like her. You’re far more beautiful than Lilith could ever be. Inside and out.”
The sincerity in his green eyes made my chest ache in the best way. But the mention of Lilith also made something cold settle in my stomach, even as we were about to kiss again.
I sat up slightly with my hands resting on his chest. “What is she doing right now? While you’re here in bed with me?”
Something flickered across Andrei’s face, like the green forests in his eyes had suddenly become overcast by a dark cloud. “She’s under the watchful eye of a guard at home. Recovering from her miscarriage.”
“About that–the miscarriage. Was it really—”
Andrei reached up and pulled me down, cutting off my question with a kiss that was tender and intense and a warning all at once. When we broke apart, both of us breathing harder, he shook his head.
“I don’t want to talk about Lilith right now,” he said quietly. “Your marriage to Damon is fake, just as my partnership is with her. I never loved Lilith, never had a real relationship with her after you left. We can spend one night together without talking about her.”
He was right. We’d wasted so many years apart because of fear and misunderstanding. Whatever complicated situation existed with Lilith, whatever needed to be resolved, it could wait until morning.
I nodded, leaning down to capture his lips again.
This was hot, electric, filled with five years of longing and want and desire. Our lips moved together like we were trying to memorize each other all over again, but we didn’t need to memorize it. We just did.
Andrei nipped at my lower lip, and I gasped softly, which gave him the opening to deepen the kiss. His tongue swept against mine, and it sent a fresh wave of desire radiating outward from that pool of honey in my low belly. I nipped back, catching his bottom lip between my teeth for just a moment before soothing it with my tongue.

We kissed like that for what felt like hours, tongues swirling together, teeth grazing sensitive skin, hands exploring what we could reach. My fingers tangled in his dark hair while his traced patterns along my spine, I tilted my head so he could lavish my jaw, tongue flicking over the sensitive spot just beneath my ear.
