“Bullshit.” I took another step closer, and she shrank back against the headboard. “You knew exactly what you were doing. You’ve been scheming and manipulating since the moment you returned. Was anything you told me over the past five years real?”

“I don’t believe you. I don’t think you’re capable of loving anyone except yourself.”

“That’s exactly the problem,” I cut her off. “I keep trying to remember that girl I fell in love with when we were teenagers, but I can’t find her anywhere. Maybe she never existed. Maybe you’ve always been this person, and I was just too blind to see it.”

“No. I’m done accepting your excuses.” I straightened, smoothing down my shirt as if her mere presence had dirtied it. “I will allow you to remain in this room under guard until you recover. Then, you will be moved to the servants‘ quarters.”

“Andrei, no!” Lilith scrambled off the bed, reaching for me. “You can’t do this!”

“From here on out, you will be of Omega status. Once you recover from the miscarriage, you’ll serve as a maid in the pack house. Under strict supervision.”

As I spoke, Lilith collapsed to her knees on the floor. Her face was streaked with tears and snot, a vision that might have worked on me before. But not now. Never again.

“Please,” she sobbed, clutching at my leg. “Don’t do this to me. I’ll do anything. I’ll leave the territory, I’ll never bother you again-”

“You should have thought of that before you tried to kill my children.”

“They’re not your children!” The words exploded out of her like acid, spittle flying from her mouth. “You don’t even know them! You’ve been in their lives for what, a few months? I’ve been by your side for years!”

“And you wasted every single one of those years lying to me.” I forcefully yanked my leg away from her grip and moved toward the door.

“Andrei, wait.” Something in the suddenly cool tone of her voice made me pause, my hand on the doorknob. “You think this is over? You think locking me up solves everything?”

I furrowed my brow and turned to look at her. Her face had smoothed into a mask of calm, tears and snot still running down her skin but her eyes were cold and calculating. I often prided myself on how hard it was to rattle me, but that look made my skin crawl. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
