“What happened?” I asked as Grace led me through the front door. “He was fine this moming.”

at 102.”
“Infirmary. I’ve got him on fluids and gave him something to bring the fever down, but he’s been asking for you.”
I followed Grace down the hallway, my mind racing. Max never got sick. Neither of the twins did, really. They’d inherited strong immune systems from their father, so for him to spike a fever this high meant something was definitely wrong.
I found him curled up on one of the infirmary beds, his dark hair plastered to his forehead with sweat and his cheeks flushed pink. He looked so small under the white sheets, and my heart clenched at the sight.
“Hey, buddy,” I said softly, sitting on the edge of the bed. “How are you feeling?”
“My head hurts. And I’m really hot.”
I pressed my hand to his forehead. He was still burning up, but not quite as bad as Grace had described. “I know, sweetheart. Grace is taking good care of you.”
“Can you sing to me?” Max asked, finally opening those green eyes that looked exactly like his father’s. “Like when I was little?”
“Of course.”
I settled more comfortably on the bed and started humming an old lullaby, the same one I’d sung to him when he was a baby and couldn’t sleep. Within minutes, his breathing had evened out and some of the tension had left his small body.
Graçe checked his temperature again while I sang. “It’s coming down,” she whispered. “Whatever this is, his body is fighting it off.”
“Thank the Goddess,” I murmured, continuing to stroke Max’s hair as his eyelids grew heavy.
“It’s probably just a bug,” Grace said quietly. “Kids his age pick them up all the time, especially during season changes. His immune system is strong–he’ll shake this off in a day or two.”
By the time I finished the lullaby, Max had fallen into a peaceful sleep. The flush had faded from his cheeks, and his skin felt cooler to the touch. Grace was right. Just a childhood bug, nothing more.
“I’ll keep an eye on him overnight,” Grace said as I stood up. “But I think the worst of it has passed.”
“Thank you. For everything.” I kissed Max’s forehead gently. “Let me know if anything changes.‘
I stepped out of the infirmary and nearly collided with Andrei in the hallway. He caught my shoulders to steady me, and in the dim light, the worry on his face was unmistakable.
“How is he?” he asked immediately.
“Better. Grace thinks it’s just a bug.”

“Can I see him?”
The concern in his question made my heart ache. He’d only been in the twins‘ lives for a few months, but already he cared about them so deeply. I stepped aside so he could pass.
“Of course. But he’s sleeping.”
ay, quietly, as if he was afraid I watched through the doorway as Andrei approached Max’s bed. He moved Co. of waking him. When he reached the bedside, he just stood there for a moment, studying Max’s peaceful face. Then, so gently I almost missed it, he reached out and brushed a strand of hair from Max’s forehead Something shifted in my chest at the sight. My wolf stirred, recognizing the protective instincts of a father watching over his pup.
After a few moments, Andrei turned and walked back toward me, but I could see the reluctance in his stride. He didn’t want to leave.
“He looks so small,” he said quietly.
“He’s going to be fine,” I assured him. “Grace knows what she’s doing.
Andrei nodded, but his eyes drifted back toward the infirmary. The need to stay close to Max was written all over his face.
