Andrei paused, and when he spoke again, his voice was softer. “You were done, and terrified, with two babies to protect. You made the best decision you could with the information you had. I don’t blame you for that. I never could.”

The tears came then, hot and fast, and I didn’t try to stop them this time. All the guilt and regret I’d been carrying for months poured out of me, and Andrei simply held me while I cried.

“I wanted this party to be perfect,” I whispered against his shoulder. “I wanted to give you something beautiful, something worth all those missed birthdays.”

“It is perfect,” he said, his hand stroking my hair. “Not because of the decorations or the cake, but because you planned it. Because you wanted me to be here.”

When I finally pulled back, wiping at my eyes, I found him watching me with an expression so tender it made my heart ache and leap all at once.

“Now,” he said, taking a step back, “let’s finish decorating for our children’s birthday party.”

By the time we stepped back to survey our work, the house had truly become a child’s greatest fantasy. Green and gold streamers created an ivy–like canopy overhead, dinosaur and princess decorations were scattered everywhere, and to my surprise, Andrei had created a rather lifelike t–rex balloon animal for the center of the table.

The first guests arrived right on schedule–children chattering excitedly as their parents brought armfuls of gifts and cards. Jane appeared at the top of the stairs in her favorite purple dress holding Damon’s hand, and her eyes widened as she saw the decorations.

“Surprise!” I called out. Her delighted squeal as she ran down the stairs made it all worth it. Andrei and I exchanged a glance, and the wink he shot me made my mouth twitch upwards into a genuine smile.

But as Jane raced down the stairs to greet her friends, it hit me again that Max would likely miss this party. Grace had informed me that he was still resting–his fever had gone down slightly, but hadn’t broken.

“Where’s Max?” one of the children asked, looking around expectantly.

Before I could figure out how to explain, Andrei appeared at my side. “He’s resting,” he said gently. “But don’t worry–he’ll be down soon.”

I shot him a grateful look, but the worry must have shown on my face because he leaned closer and spoke quietly in my ear.

“I could stay with him,” he offered. “Let you and Jane enjoy the party.”

The very suggestion made me feel sick to my stomach. “Andrei, no. This is your party too. You’ve missed so many.”

“And I’ll miss plenty more if it means taking care of my son when he’s sick.” He shrugged, already moving toward the stairs. “Besides, maybe this is exactly what Max and I need. Some quiet time together.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m sure.” Andrei flashed me a smile as he began ascending the stairs. “Go enjoy the party. Jane needs her mom.”

The decision felt both right and heartbreaking. I wanted Andrei to experience the joy of watching the twins celebrate, but I also knew that Max needed him more right now.
