Jane was bouncing on her bed in her pajamas, clutching a new stuffed bunny she’d gotten from Grace for her birthday against her chest while I tried to coax her under the covers.
She had an awful lot of energy for a little girl at ten o’clock at night, although I supposed that was because we had spent most of the day quietly reading and sitting around the house in an attempt not to wake Max.
“Just five more minutes, Mommy?” Jane pleaded. “I’m not tired yet.‘
“You’ve already had three sets of five more minutes,” I said with a smile as I gently laid her down on the bed and pulled the blanket up to her chin. “Your brother needs his rest, and if you’re running around with the lights on, he won’t be able to sleep.”
Jane sighed and looked over at her brother, who was currently bundled up in his bed next to hers. I couldn’t bear to keep him in the infirmary for another night, not when Jane loved having her brother sleep beside her. And especially not when I had already seen his little body gobbled up by an infirmary bed so much lately.
“Alright,” she whispered. “If it will help Max get better faster, then I’ll be good.”
“That’s my girl. Goodnight, love,” I said gently, kissing her on the forehead. “And sweet dreams.”
“Goodnight. Actually… Mommy?” she said as I reached over to turn off her bedside lamp.
“What is it, sweetheart?”
“Are we going to live here forever now?”
The question caught me off guard. I’d expected her to ask for water or another bedtime story, not if we were going to officially move to Moonshadow. I sat back down on the edge of her bed, studying her face in the dim light. “Why do you ask that?”
She shrugged. “Because I like it here. The house is bigger than Uncle Damon’s, and there are more places to explore. And Daddy’s here.” She hugged her bunny tighter. “I like being close to Daddy.”
My chest tightened at the hope in her voice. I didn’t know how to explain the complications of her life to her after she and her brother had already been through so much. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to, or if I even had the strength to find the words.
“We’re just here so Max can get better,” I said carefully, not wanting to lie but also not wanting to upset her when she was going through watching her brother be so sick. “Once he’s feeling stronger-
“But couldn’t we just stay?” Jane interrupted. “Max likes it here too. He told me so when we were in the garden.”
I gnawed on my lower lip for a moment as I searched for the right words. “Sometimes things aren’t that simple, baby. We need to be patient and see what happens.”
Jane was quiet for a moment, her brow furrowing as she tried to make sense of it all. Then she looked up at me with that serious expression she got sometimes, the one that made her seem older than her years,
The one that Max always wore.
