Chapter 249
Natalia
The next morning, I arrived bright and early at the arena after a quick breakfast. David promised to meet me there to begin my training, which I was so excited for that I could hardly even sleep the night before.
We started with a series of stretches and poses designed to enhance my flexibility and agility.
“Godess, and to think I once saw myself as flexible,” I groaned as David contorted his body into a shape I’d never seen before with complete and total ease in front of me. Meanwhile, I was struggling just to breathe while I was holding a backbend. “I feel so out of shape now.”
David chuckled and straightened. “It just takes consistent time and effort to become and remain flexible. I’ve seen the strongest and most skilled warriors struggle with flexibility. It has nothing to do with being in shape or not.”
“Well, you say that, but I feel like I’m going to keel over already and we haven’t even begun the real training yet.
David grinned and helped me out of my backbend–I might have fallen on my head had he not placed an arm under my spine and helped me stand–then began to lead me through the first drills in the ring.
This, at least, was more up my alley. To gauge my physical abilities, David instructed me through various exercises: burpees, pushups, squats, lunges. That sort of thing was exactly what Andrei and Alina focused on, and so I did the moves with ease.
Due to the cool underground air beneath the mountain, as opposed to the hot and humid summer training outside in Ashmoor, I hardly even broke a sweat until the sprinting portion of the morning.
“You seem to be in excellent physical shape despite your lack of proper flexibility,” David said as we geared up for a sparring match and a weapons test. “Your muscles are well proportioned and your cardiovascular health is incredible.”
“Thank you.” I smiled warmly as I adjusted the leather training gauntlets David loaned me. “I fell out of habit after having the twins, but I’ve been working really hard to take care of my health and be able to protect myself and my children.”
“It shows. I assume you have a personal trainer back home?”
“A Moonshadow warrior named Alina,” I replied. “And Andrei trains me often, too.”
David’s eyes guttered briefly at the mention of Andrei, just like they always did, but he didn’t comment on it and I didn’t ask why he kept looking at me like that. With that, David led me to the center of the ring and began walking me through the basic combat moves we’d practiced yesterday.
Unbeknownst to David, I’d spent a good portion of my sleepless night poring over books in the library. I’d found a section on Bloodmoon fighting strategies and had brushed up a bit, which paid off more than I expected. Halfway through our session, as we stopped for a water break, I realized that a small crowd of other warriors had formed near the sparring ring and were watching me and murmuring amongst themselves. A couple even made a hand gesture with three fingers and their thumbs pressed against their chests that I didn’t recognize.
David turned to me and patted me on the shoulder.
