Andrei’s POV

I was bent over the construction plans for the outer wall when there was a knock on my office door. The blueprints were covered in red ink where I’d been marking changesreinforcements here, additional watchtowers there, anything that might give us an advantage against the increasing rogue attacks.

We’d managed to build half of the wall already even in the past few days alone, thanks to the earnest and selfless efforts of our civilians. Everyone who was ablebodied and had spare time had chipped in, many even providing their own tools and materials to contribute to the cause.

I hoped it would be enough. But with all the recent attacks, it certainly didn’t feel like it. My mind was already racing with ideas for an inner wall one mile in from the outer oneanother line of defence against the growing numbers of rogues before they could reach residential areas.

Either that, or I was going to have to call all civilians to the estate grounds. People wouldn’t be happy about leaving their homes for weeks on end, and it would certainly put a strain on our resources, but what else could we do? I couldn’t have people dying in their own homes.

Come in,I called out without looking up. I knew it would be Damon, because he always knocked with the same pattern.

Damon entered and closed the door behind him. When’s the last time you slept?he asked by way of greeting, and shoved a plate of bread, cheese, and bacon under my nose.

I slept last night.I pushed the plate off to the side, having no appetite lately.

For how long?Damon asked.

I finally glanced up at him from under my brows. Long enough.

That’s not an answer.Damon crossed his arms and leaned against the edge of my desk. You look like shit.

Gee. Thanks.I rolled my eyes and returned to my work. Truthfully, I knew that Damon was right; I did look like shit, and I felt like shit, too. I hadn’t slept or eaten properly since my return from Bloodmoon, and it didn’t help any that I couldn’t get a letter to Natalia now that the messenger had been brutally murdered by rogues in

the forest.

I had tried to send another letter with one of our messengers, but that one was killed, too. I couldn’t risk more innocent people being murdered, so I gave up.

I wanted to see her more than anything. But I didn’t have time to get to Bloodmoon, not with everything going on. There had been three rogue sightings by civilians just last night. Three rogues had somehow breached our defenses and were tormenting locals in their own fucking homes.

Damon, as if reading my mind, tilted his head and said, You could go see her, you know. Check on her.

Trust me, I would if I could, but I simply can’t leave right now,I said with a sigh.

“The pack will survive a few days without you. Mila can handle things here.

What if there’s another attack while I’m gone?

Andrei, you’re no good to anyone if you run yourself into the ground with worry. And you’re definitely no good to Natalia and the baby if you’re too exhausted and terrified to think straight.

Maybe you’re right,I said after a moment of hesitation. I leaned back in my chair and set my pen down, rubbing my tired eyes. Maybe I could go to Bloodmoon tomorrow. Check on Natalia and the twins. Just long enough to make sure everything’s alright, then come right back-

As if on cue, the door burst open without warning. One of my scouts stumbled in, breathless and clearly terrified. Alpha,he gasped. The southern border. Another wave is coming.

I was on my feet immediately. How many this time?

At least fifty. Maybe more. They hit the checkpoint at dawn and overwhelmed the guards before anyone could sound the alarm.

Fifty rogues. That was more than we’d ever faced at once. Usually they came in groups of five or ten, hit fast, and disappeared back into the forest.

It was getting worse by the fucking day.

Damon and I didn’t hesitate to grab our weapons and follow the scout to the southern border.

The fight that followed was brutal. These rogues were better armed and better coordinated than any we had faced before. They moved like a real army instead of a rabble, with some even taking on the role of commanders and sergeants.

By the time we finally drove them back, the sun was setting and more than half of our southern border defenses had been destroyed. We’d lost twelve warriors, with another twenty wounded. The rogues had retreated, but not before inflicting serious damage on both our numbers and the wall.

We can’t keep this up,Damon said as we surveyed the wreckage. Blood stained his leathers, although none of it appeared to be his own, thankfully. If they can risk fifty warriors for a single attack, how many more do they have?

I don’t know.I wiped my sword clean and sheathed it. But I think it’s time we swallow our pride and call for help. We can’t defend against numbers like this on our own.

That night, I sent messages to every allied pack in the regionevery pack that had ever traded with us or signed mutual defense agreements. I asked for warriors, supplies, anything they could spare.

The responses started coming back two days later.

Only a few letters made it back. The rest, I quickly learned, were likely intercepted, judging from the dead messengers our scouts found.

And all of them said the same thing: that they would love to spare resources and warriors, but they couldn’t. Because they were also under attack. These rogues weren’t just going after Moonshadowthey were going after everyone all at once.

And the attacks weren’t random or haphazard, either. They were coordinated, perfectly calculated to ensure that the neutral territories between packs were too dangerous to traverse, and if anyone tried to spare units to travel, they would attack the pack lands. Most messages couldn’t get through, supply trails were ambushed,
