The medic looked uncertain, as did Andrei, but he relented when I touched his arm and gave him a reassuring
We made our way toward the infirmary, which was bustling when we entered. Multiple cots contained wounded warriors, some nursing minor injuries while others were completely unconscious and wrapped with blood- soaked bandages, Someone was crying out from behind a curtain, and the blood–curdling sounds made me want to retch again.
“Grace,” Andrei said, striding over to a cot where she was sitting “When did you get here?”
She didn’t look up from the motionless form in the bed–Damon. He had bandages wrapped around his chest and appeared to be sleeping, although each inhale was accompanied by a wheeze and each exhale with a wet cough.
“Just arrived,” she muttered, thumb stroking over the back of Damon’s hand. “Asshole couldn’t even be bothered to wake up to say hello.”
I took a seat beside her and placed a hand on her back. “I brought someone who might be able to help.”
Grace jerked her head up, eyes widening briefly when she saw me there. Then, her gaze flicked warily over to Karl, who was standing beside me.
“May I examine him?” Karl asked.
Grace hesitated but finally nodded, and Karl moved to Damon’s bedside. He placed his hands carefully over the bandages, then checked Damon’s pulse and breathing.
“The internal bleeding has indeed stopped, which is good,” Karl said after a few minutes. “But his body is struggling to regenerate. There’s a technique I learned for stimulating the wolf’s healing response. I can try it, if I may…”
“Just fucking do it,” Grace said immediately.
Karl slipped a small, glowing gemstone out of his pocket–the same kind the healers used in Bloodmoon–and worked for nearly an hour. I wasn’t exactly sure what he did, but gradually, some color returned to Damon’s face and his breathing became easier.
“That’s all I can do for now,” Karl said, stepping back. “But I think he’s stabilizing.”
Grace broke down then, tears streaming down her face as she gripped Damon’s hand. “If you’re lying, I’ll fucking kill you.”
Karl blanched at her threat, but I offered him a watery smile and put my arm around Grace’s shoulders. “You know Damon is too stubborn to die from something as simple as an axe wound.”
“When I heard about the attack, I thought…” Grace couldn’t finish the sentence.
“I know.” I held her while she cried, thinking about how close we’d all come to losing everything in one night.
After Grace calmed down, I left her with Karl to continue monitoring Damon and went to find Andrei. He was in the courtyard again, directing cleanup efforts and talking to his Beta. I hadn’t even noticed he’d left the

infirmary.
When he saw me approaching, he dismissed the others and walked over to meet me.
“How is he?” Andrei asked.
“Better, thanks to Karl. Grace is staying with him tonight.”
Andrei nodded, then looked around at the destruction surrounding us. “We lost eleven warriors last night. I thought Damon would be one of them.”
I noticed his hands were shaking slightly as he reached up to run them through his hair. I reached out to catch his wrists and pulled him close.
“Hey,” I whispered. “You need to rest. When was the last time you slept?”
