Chapter 326
Natalia’s POV
I grabbed Jane’s hand and we made our way upstairs to the boys‘ room. Max had been sleeping on and off all day, which had me worried despite Karl’s reassurances that it was normal for his recovery after the harrowing experience in the Thornwood.
The door was cracked open, and I could see lamplight spilling out into the hallway. “Max?” I called out, pushing the door open the rest of the way. I let out a breath of relief upon seeing that he was sitting up and playing with one of his stuffed animals.
“Mommy!” He set aside his toy and grinned.
“Hey, sweetheart.” I sat down on the edge of the bed and pressed my hand to his forehead. Cool to the touch–not a hint of a fever or any other symptoms other than lethargy. “How are you feeling?”
“Better. Mr. Karl says I’m almost all fixed.” He rubbed his eyes. “Where’s Jane?”
“I’m right here, you dummy.” Jane clambered up onto the bed beside him. “You’ve been sleeping forever!” “I know. I had weird dreams.” Max yawned and leaned against me. “Did you save me any cake from dinner?” “We didn’t have cake tonight.” Jane wrinkled her nose. “Just that icky pie I don’t like.”
“Rhubarb pie,” I said with a laugh. “And you’ll like it a lot more once you’re older.” I wrapped my arms around both of them, pulling them close. It had been too long since we’d all been together like this, just the three of us. ” You can have some soup for now, Max. Sweets can wait until you’re better.”
Max pouted, but nestled closer to me. “Mommy, are we going to stay here?”
“What do you mean?”
“Here. With Daddy.” He gestured around us, then gave me a very serious look that was almost a perfect carbon copy of the very same one his father often gave me. “I don’t want to go back to Bloodmoon.”
Jane nodded in agreement. “Yeah. Uncle David is nice, but Aunt Helena was scary.”
“Tell me about it,” I muttered. They had no idea just how scary Helena truly was. But I forced a smile and stroked Max’s hair. “We’re not going anywhere. This is our home now. All of ours.”
The words slipped out without conscious thought, but I didn’t regret them. They felt like they came from the heart -truer than anything I’d ever said. Moonshadow was our home. Not Bloodmoon, even if my family lived there.
I recalled the days when my father and David tried to convince me to stay in Bloodmoon, to remain with our people and even marry Karl.
But as much of a connection I felt to Bloodmoon, they weren’t truly my people. Not like those here. Not like the home I’d once loved and lost.
“Really?” Jane perked up. “So we don’t have to leave again?”
“No, baby. We’re staying right here with Daddy.”
Max grinned, and it was the first real smile I’d seen from him in weeks. “Good. I like my room better here, anyway.”
I laughed. Jane was quiet for a moment, then asked, “Are you and Daddy going to get married again?”

I blinked. “Where did that come from?”
“Uncle Damon said something about it yesterday when he was visiting. He said Daddy’s been planning something.” She looked between Max and me. “Are you?”
Of course he’d said that. I thought about Andrei’s coy comments, the way his hand kept drifting to his pocket, the meaningful looks he’d been giving me for two days now. It made me blush, but I decided not to get mine or the twins‘ hopes up just yet. “I don’t know, sweetheart. Maybe.”
The twins looked satisfied by that response.
