Chapter 349
Catherine and Ellen nodded and went to follow me into the house, but Meg, cleared her throat. “Actually, don’t take this the wrong way, but I can’t stay for long. It’s too dangerous out there. I’d rather hear what you have to say now so I can get home before nightfall.”
All business, it seemed. I had to commend that.
I hesitated for a moment, thinking back to my binder full of talking points and my carefully arranged luncheon. Holding the meeting in the middle of the driveway when the cold wind was whipping through our hair wasn’t exactly what I had originally planned, but it would have to do.
“Very well.” I stopped and turned, addressing the other two. “Is that alright with you both? We can make this quick. I’m assuming everyone wants to get home safely.”
Catherine and Ella both nodded. With that, I launched into my proposal: their husbands had refused to meet with Andrei for a potential alliance in the war, even though Green Ridge had once been allied with us, and Oakshield and Aspen were on either side of us.
I told them exactly what I thought: that their husbands were being selfish and narrow–minded, that we were stronger together, and that this war was about to get so much worse than we previously thought. I told them- vaguely, for now–about the potential weapons that the rogue forces might have, and how if we remained as separate packs instead of a coalition, the enemy would systematically slaughter us pack by pack until they took over all of the territories.
The Lunas listened intently as I spoke. Not a single one said a word.
When I was finished, Meg nodded curtly. “I see. Well, I’ll speak to my husband. I can’t make any promises because he’s been a stubborn bastard lately, but I can send a letter as soon as possible.” She reached for her car door handle. “What say you all to another meeting within a week? With our cowardly husbands by our sides this time.” I held back a laugh at that, even though I was pretty certain Meg wasn’t trying to be funny.
Ellen rubbed her hands together nervously. “Well, Dan has had his hands full lately… But I can talk to him. I’ll make him listen.”
“Thank you. And you, Catherine?” I turned to the final Luna. “I know our history is a bit strained, but—”
“I’ll speak to my husband.” Catherine’s voice was surprisingly warm, “I had no idea he had refused to meet with you. That’s unacceptable. We’re supposed to stick together, not let the enemy keep us separate.”
I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding.
“Thank you. All of you.” I turned and bowed my head respectfully to each woman in turn. “You have no idea how much this means to me. If we could form an alliance, we might be able to turn the tide of this war in our favor before it gets worse.”
Catherine and Ellen nodded and made their way back to their vehicles. Meg remained for a moment, staring at me almost as if with surprise.
“Is something wrong?” I found myself asking, taking a step closer.
She shook her head, smiling as she flung her car door open. “Not at all. It’s just nice to see you taking charge now -you’re not the frightened little girl I once saw at the Green Ridge merger. You make a fine leader, Natalia. I look forward to working together.”
I didn’t know how to respond to that. But I didn’t have to. Because Meg got in her car and drove off, following the
