Chapter 351
Chapter 351
Ever since he returned, David came to my room late at night. He would bring me food and water, which I refused at first out of self–wallowing until the hunger became too much to ignore. He told me that Natalia, the twins, and Karl were safe. For now.
He didn’t do much else. I think he was just trying to keep me alive in case he needed information–information that I truly didn’t have. Mother didn’t tell me anything except my purpose for being alive. I didn’t know what she and my biological father had planned. I didn’t even remember what my biological father looked like; I just knew he was at the top of all of this.
Meanwhile, I assumed that David kept the peace in Bloodmoon, because there were no raids or murders that 1 knew of. If Mother was planning something, then she was being very strategic and careful, which was no surprise when it came to her. It was always her strong suit, after all.
But then, two weeks into my sentence, David came to me with more than food. He came after midnight, carrying a tray of bread and cheese, which I scarfed down immediately. I hadn’t seen him in a couple of days, and Mother’s servants had ignored me entirely, so I was starving.
“Where have you been?” I asked, although I didn’t expect an answer. David didn’t trust me enough to tell me anything important.
This time, though, was different.
Without saying a word, David crossed the room and grabbed one of my earrings, practically ripping it out of my ear. “Ow!” I cried, clutching my throbbing ear. “What was that for?”
David held the ruby earring up to the candlelight, watching as it flickered through the rich red material. Silently, he handed me a folded–up letter.
Frowning, I took the letter and scanned it quickly. My brows shot up as I read its contents.
It was from Natalia and Andrei. They said they had found a ruby–encrusted knife with magical properties–when wielded by someone “bonded” to the knife, it was as if it had a mind of its own. They had tested it and confirmed it, and claimed that the rubies might come from the far north, in a mountain known as the Red Peak.
“Apparently, there could be more of those rubies,” David whispered when I set aside the letter and stared at him in shock. He thrust my earring in my face. “Do you know anything about them?”
I blinked at the piece of jewelry. I didn’t know anything about any of that; I just wore those earrings because they were the one gift Mother had ever given me and I thought they were pretty.
But after reading Natalia’s letter, I wasn’t so sure. They said they thought the rubies could be the “weapon” Mother occasionally mentioned, and that they could be used for a multitude of purposes.
Mother always wore ruby jewelry. In fact, she had multiple pieces of it; earrings, a ring, a necklace. She cherished the necklace most of all, and wore it almost every day; I often caught her touching it when she was deep in thought.
Was it possible that the necklace had more to it all this time? And could it be possible that there were more… weapons made of those rubies out there? Weapons that could bring Mother’s plan to fruition?
Without hesitating, I grabbed my other earring and pulled it out, tossing it to David. He caught it easily and stared
at me in shock.
