I swore, men like him, the good ones, at least, always seemed to become worrywarts when it came to pregnancy, It was kind of cute, but also a bit suffocating. At least he was being better about it now, though.
“I was thinking of names again,” I said then, drawing my lower lip through my teeth. “Girl names, in particular.
Andrei cocked his head to one side, a single lock of raven hair falling across his chin with the motion. “And what makes you think we’re having a girl?”
1 flushed a deep shade of red. “I just… feel it.” I splayed my hand over his, which was still resting on my belly. “J sense a feminine presence.”
Andrei’s face split into a grin. “Another little girl, huh? As if Jane isn’t enough of a handful?”
I smirked. “Hey, Max is just as much of a handful, and he’s a boy. All of our kids are going to be pains in our asses because the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” I poked Andrei, indicating that he was the common denominator in this situation, and he smirked.
“And what names were you thinking of?” he asked.
“Well… There really was just one,” I admitted, suddenly feeling bashful. I looked away and said quietly, “Hope.”
“You’re hoping for what?”
I growled indignantly and went to smack him, but he was grinning. “You’re impossible,” I laughed, shaking my head. “What do you think of it? Hope.”
Andrei thought for a long moment, then nodded. “I think it’s a lovely name. Very fitting, given the times we’re in right now.‘
“That’s exactly what I was thinking.” I pulled my hand away from my belly to return to stroking Max’s hair. He made a little sound in his sleep and nuzzled closer, and I felt my heart turn warm at the gesture. “The world feels bleak, but Grace was right–when I think about my family, it’s like I’m safe inside this… little pocket of happiness. Like nothing can hurt us, as long as we’re together.”
Andrei scooched closer and wrapped one arm around my shoulders, pulling me close enough to press a tender kiss to my temple. “And our little ones are the beacon of hope surrounding us.
The thought alone was enough to bring tears to my eyes, although I blinked them away. Damn pregnancy hormones.
“They are,” I said, resting my head on Andrei’s shoulder. “Our children are our future. Everything I do, everything I have ever done–it’s all been for them.”
Andrei and I returned to our silence again after that, just enjoying the brief moment of peace and happiness while the twins slept. It wasn’t quite bedtime yet, but I felt myself beginning to doze somewhat, lulled by the warmth of the fire and the feeling of my family curled around me.
But the peace was soon shattered–or perhaps simply interrupted–when Andrei’s Beta suddenly entered the room. “Alpha, I—”
“Shh!” Andrei whispered, whipping his head around and pressing his fingers to his lips. “The twins.”
“Oh. Sorry.” The Beta lowered his voice and looked between us sheepishly. “Should I come back later, or…?”
“No.” Andrei turned fully to look at him. “What did you need?”
