Chapter 367

Once the leaves were chewed into a sticky paste, I forced David’s mouth open and slipped them under his tongue. He sputtered and gagged, but I held his mouth shut, massaging his throat until I was certain the poultice went down.

And then I waited.

An eternity seemed to pass. For the longest time, I thought it wouldn’t work, that my memory was meaningless after all. But then

David’s eyes cracked open. Not much, but just enough to look at me.

Whathappened?he slurred, pressing his fingertips to the sting of the cut on the side of his cheekno doubt where the assassin’s poisontipped blade had sliced the skin.

Wolfsbane poison.I didn’t dare feel relieved just yet. Mother locked us in here. She knows we’ve been working against her. And I think we might be the last two people in this compound who are.

David’s eyes widened a little. He tried to sit up, but quickly fell back down with a dull thud, and gagged. I handed him a handkerchief to wipe the bile from the side of his mouth.

We have to get out,he whispered, reaching into his doublet. He pulled out what looked like two long, thin pins with differently shaped ends. You know how to pick a lock?

No.

Well, you’re about to learn.David pushed himself up so he was seated, slumped against the side of my bed, and tossed the lockpicks to me. I caught them and stared at them warily.

What if someone’s outside the door?I asked.

Then we’ll deal with them. Surely you know how to use the sharp end of a knife?

My throat bobbed, but I nodded and hurried over to the door, listening for any sound outside. I heard nothing; the only sound my earrings picked up was the distant murmur of voices far off in the compound.

It took a lot of effort, but somehow, David’s instructions worked. Eventually, the lock clicked and the door creaked open.

I braced myself, expecting one of Mother’s cohorts to shove me back into the room, but to my surprise, the hallway was empty. Apparently Mother didn’t think I would bother to try to escape.

David was well enough to at least hold himself upright, which was an improvement. With one of his arms hooked over my shoulders, we managed to shuffle out of the room and down the hall, toward the spiral staircase leading to the servantsentrance. It was slow going, getting David down the stairs, but eventually we emerged at

the bottom.

Just a little further to go,he grunted, struggling to move one leg after the other. We’ll cut through the south gate and travel through the Thornwood in wolf form.

I blanched. You’ll be faster on your own.

You’re not planning on staying, are you?David asked. We hurried across the plaza, sticking to the shadows, and made our way toward the gate. She’ll kill you.

Of course Mother would kill me. I was already hearing the distant sounds of Mother’s warriors. Her thralls, her servants, her cultistswhatever they were. I heard shouting, Feet pounding

I’ll only slow you down.I led David over to the gate and turned to him. You have to get to Natalia. Mother is going to launch an attack on Moonshadow. I think she already has your father, and likely half the pack, under her command.

But you-

I. Will. Slow. You. Down.I ripped out the earrings and pressed them into his palm.
