Chapter 371

Andrei nodded. Likely. He glanced at me, and I could feel the silent question: But why the fuck does she want my mate taken prisoner? It was a question that neither of us dared answer just yet.

*Well then,Mila said, pushing her sleeves up and leaning over the map, her hands pressed flat into the table, we don’t have much time then, do we? So let’s get to work on this plan.

I say we march on Bloodmoon,Damon said immediately.

The table went silent. Grace snapped her gaze to her mate. You can’t be serious. You just recovered!

We should be proactive,Damon countered. Helena might not know just yet that we’re onto her plans. If we strike soon, we might be able to stop her before he launches a fullscale invasion.

Grace’s face flamed with indignation. My heart pounded, but when I met Andrei’s gaze, I knew that he was going to agree. We had talked about it throughout the night. We had already made our decision.

He’s right,Andrei said quietly. If we can get ahead of Helena, we might be able to take her out with little bloodshed. Bloodmoon is a small, isolated pack. Between Ashmoor and Moonshadow’s forces, we could win the battle. He gestured to his brother. Damon and I know the territory by now. We will lead the warriors.

Grace looked like she was going to be sick. Under the table, her hand squeezed mine so tight I thought she might snap my fingers offbut I was squeezing back just as hard.

By midnight, it was settled. There was no time to lose. Andrei and Damon prepared their caravan with four dozen of Ashmoor and Moonshadow’s best warriors. The air smelled like sweat and leather, and now, more than ever, I wanted to join them in battle.

But I was pregnant. And the twins needed me.

My pack needed me, too.

My pack. Moonshadow. Of which I was now the Luna.

I stared at the simple golden band on my finger, watching it catch the torchlight as Andrei adjusted his leathers in front of me. He had slipped it there only an hour before, beneath the light of the moon and the candles around the base of the beautiful willow tree that stood behind the estate. 1

I would never forget that moment. The four of us together. Andrei and Damon standing back to back, saying their vows in tandem. Grace and I dressed in simple white gowns with crowns of willow branches and wheat around our

heads.

I had always hoped for a summer wedding. But this felt right. Intimate. Unforgettable.

I just hoped it wouldn’t be in vain.

You have to come back,I murmured, pressing my ringed hand against Andrei’s chest and splaying my fingers wide over the leather. You can’t put two rings on my finger and die so soon.

Andrei’s lips twitched into what could have been a smile were it not for the circumstances. He placed his hand over mine and pressed my palm harder against his chest so I could feel his heart beating through the leather. His pulse echoed through our freshlyformed bond, through the raw and aching mark that now sat on the junction where my neck met my shoulder.

I can make no such promises, his voice echoed through my mind. The sensation of our mindlink, finally, after all these years, was jarring and perfect all at once. Like coming home after a journey that was too long, only to find

that home was on fire, but at least it’s home, and that’s all that matters.

I dug my nails into his chest. Promise me anyway, even if it’s a lie.

Andrei pulled me close and slammed his mouth to mine. He tasted like wine and sweat and fear, but also love and candlelight and the swaying branches of a willow tree in late autumn.

I promise.
