Chapter 373
Natalia’s POV
I was the Luna of Moonshadow now.
It hadn’t been what I’d expected–no grand wedding, no swearing–in ceremony, no one to witness my becoming a leader except those who were closest to me and the Moon Goddess herself.
But it was my life now. My responsibility. And with Andrei gone, I had to stand in his place.
It was my duty to ensure the pack remained standing while he was gone. No, not just standing, but thriving and safe and protected against the waves of rogues.
I leapt into my duties with fervor; perhaps it was a mechanism to cope with Andrei being gone, but I didn’t care. As soon as I could get away from the house, I prepared an escort to take me to Oakshield, where I met with Luna Ellen and her oh–so–wonderful husband, Dan.
I didn’t expect a glittering reception, but when I climbed out of the car and found Ellen standing by herself with Dan nowhere to be found, my brows lifted.
“Where is Dan?” I asked, spreading my hands wide as I approached. “We’re supposed to patrol the new wall today.”
Ellen looked around nervously. “Yes, well… I told him it was just you coming, and he said he doesn’t need to be here if that’s the case.”
I stopped in my tracks. “Why?”
Her cheeks flushed. “He, um…” I could tell she was trying to soften her husband’s words, which were no doubt quite colorful and abrasive, as per his usual attitude. “He only wants to meet with the Alpha.”
“Well, I’m the Luna of Moonshadow now.” I held my hand up, revealing the band I had put on only just last night. “And Andrei is currently on a mission, so he couldn’t come. Unless Dan is on a similar mission, I really must insist that he comes to this meeting.”
Ellen looked uncertain, but called her husband anyway. It sounded like they were arguing for a bit, but finally, she hung up and walked back over to me. “He’ll come.”
“Good.” I glanced at my watch. “We should still be able to patrol everything in time.”
Ellen nodded, and we chatted amicably while we waited. She told me that the wall construction had been going well, and we discussed the possibility of using the leftover resources to build a small barracks for Oakshield warriors at the southern border, which was largely open to attack from rogues.
Dan took his time arriving, but eventually showed up. I turned to him as he waddled across the lawn, already looking bored.
“Nice of you to come, Alpha Dan,” I said, curling my lip as he approached. “Shall we get started now?”
Dan grunted. “Where is your mate?”
“He’s on a mission.“.
“And he just sent you here, alone, in his stead?”
“I brought my own warriors for protection,” I replied curtly, gesturing to the entourage behind me, “but I will be representing Moonshadow during this meeting.”

Dan looked displeased, of course, I knew he hated me he hated any woman with a voice of her own—but I didn’t deign to comment on it. Rather, I simply turned on my heel and began walking toward the first checkpoint with long, quick strides. Dan’s stockiness forced him to nearly jog to keep up with me.
“I see your western post is a little shoddy,” I pointed out during the first checkpoint, nudging some of the loose boards with my foot. I glanced at Ellen, then at Dan. “Did you require more laborers? We might be able to spare
some
“Our work is not shoddy.” Dan puffed his chest out indignantly. “Besides, what do you know about construction? To me, this wall looks perfectly stable.”
I made no effort to hide rolling my eyes. “All due respect, Dan, but this section is quite literally falling apart.” I grabbed one of the boards and pulled it free easily, nails and all, and held it up. “If I could do that, what do you think a horde of rogues could do?”
