Chapter 376

I didn’t think. I just whirled, my blade cutting anything it could find. I caught a glimpse of movement in the corner of my eye and saw Damon struggling against a tree as an arrow, completely on its own, tried to force itself into his throat.

He had both hands wrapped around it and was fighting it with all his might, but it kept inching closer until he finally managed to snap the arrow in two. Only then did the ruby’s light gutter out and the tip fell to the ground.

I turned then, feeling a presence behind me, and saw him. A Bloodmoon warrior, tall and broad and cruel- looking, holding a curved scimitar in each hand. Each one was encrusted with a single ruby in the hilt, pulsing with that red light.

Shit.

I took a step back, calling to Damon over my shoulder, I need some backup!

Bit difficult right now,Damon replied as he clashed with another warrior wielding a ruby mace.

Before I could respond, the warrior attacked. I brought my sword up, and his blade cut across mine, sending us both reeling back with a scream of metal. I lowered my stance, preparing for another lunge.

But he didn’t move toward me. He simply released one of his scimitars. Dropped it.

It hovered for a moment. The warrior’s sneer made my blood run cold.

And then the scimitar flew at me.

I just barely managed to dodge. It narrowly missed the tree behind me, but sliced right through the throat of one of my men on its path. The warrior went down like a ton of bricks, unmoving and wideeyed.

The scimitar arced back toward me. I cursed and slammed it out of the air with my sword, but then the other scimitar came at me. I only managed to duck just as it sliced a strand of hair free from my head. The dark lock fell to my feet.

The world narrowed to those two scimitars. All the while, as I blocked, parried, ducked, and rolled, their wielder simply leaned against a tree with his arms crossed. Watching. Commanding. Sneering.

Suddenly, one of the scimitars raked across my ribs. Whitehot pain blinded me momentarily. I wasn’t sure how, but I managed to duck as the other scimitar whizzed past my head. But I faltered, clutching the sudden river of blood pouring from the gash in my abdomen.

I heard the warrior’s laugh. When my vision cleared, I found myself kneeling, and I looked up to see him approaching with both scimitars in hand now. He was coming to finish the job.

I reached for my sword, but each movement was agony. The gash was deep, so deep I could see bone.

The warrior raised one curved sword, ruby catching the light. For a moment, all I saw was Natalia’s face. Her smile. Her lips forming the words I love you.

But death never came. The warrior sputtered and dropped his weapons as a blade pierced through his throat, emerging through the front from the other side. When the blade retracted and the warrior fell, I saw Damon standing over me. He picked up the scimitars and stuck them in his belt, then hooked his arm around my waist and hauled me to my feet.

We have to go!His voice was nearly lost to me beneath the sound of ringing in my ears, but it didn’t matter. Damon began halfcarrying me away from the chaos, away from the battle. My vision ebbed and flowed. It would

only be a matter of time before I lost consciousness.

But somehow, perhaps because of the adrenaline in my veins, we rat. I managed to stay upright, to move from tree to tree, leaning on my brother for support.

This way!I heard Damon shout, pulling me toward a rocky outcrop. The sounds of howls cut through the forest; we were being chased. Damon practically hauled me over to the rocks, where there was a narrow cave entrance. We slipped inside just as a pack of wolves ran past.

The cave was dark and dank, the scent of mildew mingling with the metallic tang of my own blood. As Damon and I leaned against the wall, chests heaving, the sound of water dripping echoed through the space.

I looked down into the darkness. The depths seemed to be an abyss; this was no small cave.

How deep does this thing go?I whispered, grimacing as Damon tore a piece of his shirt free and began wrapping it around my ribs.

Don’t know.Damon tightened the bandage, then hissed under his breath at the sound of approaching shouts. He grabbed my arm and pulled me deeper into the darkness. But we’re about to find out.
