Natalia’s POV
I woke to the sensation of a horrible pain in my head. It throbbed and ached like I was being drilled in the skull with a jackhammer, and I felt immediately sick from it, like I might retch at any moment.
Swallowing down the bile that began to bubble up in my throat, I tried my best to wrack what was left of my mind to remember what had happened before now.
It took me a moment, but finally, I remembered… a man standing in the bedroom. A man I didn’t recognize; not a rogue… A Bloodmoon civilian, perhaps? I couldn’t recall. I had never seen his face.
Then, I remembered the next moments. I had tried to scream for help and reached for my knife, but it happened before I could make a sound. The ruby in the man’s hand pulsed. A flash of light blinded me, and something cracked across my skull. The last thing I recalled was pulling the twins into my arms and falling.
And now here I was.
Which was… where was I, actually?
Something soft was pressed against my cheek, and I realized, then, with a dizzying feeling in my head, that I was moving. Or at least… something under me was moving. Carrying me.
Cracking my eyes open, I found myself moving through the dark forest, lit only by the pale slivers of moonlight that peeked through the thick canopy overhead. The ground blurred under me. The air was cold, biting my skin through my dress. But something had been draped over my back–a woolen blanket, maybe?
And there was something warm under me, too. I realized, then, that the soft thing my face was pressed to was thick, wiry fur. The scent of a wolf I didn’t recognize suddenly flooded my senses, and I gasped, trying to sit up,
but it was no use.
I was tied to the wolf’s back. My arms were wrapped around its neck and tied firmly at the wrists, and harsh rope was cutting uncomfortably into my abdomen.
“Let me go,” I snarled immediately, yanking on the wolf’s neck. Maybe I could strangle it, force it to release me-
But the wolf just shook languidly as if merely trying to dispel water from its fur, loosening my already weak grip, and kept walking through the forest as if it didn’t even notice my presence.
“It’s better if you don’t try to escape,” a male voice said, causing me to jerk my head up. The motion made my vision spin again, and this time, a bit of vomit escaped my lips. It tasted of the dinner I’d just had in Bloodmoon. I gagged and sputtered onto the wolf’s fur, causing the wolf to snarl in annoyance.
When my vision cleared, I saw a man walking alongside the wolf, pulling some kind of sled filled with what looked like lumpy supply sacks behind him.
He grinned at me and gestured to the little bundles within the sled. “Better for the kids if you behave,” he said.
Gasping, I wrenched my head around to get a better look. It wasn’t supplies in the sled. Max and Jane were warmly bundled in thick blankets, both sleeping, side by side.
The same rough ropes that bound me were holding their arms to their sides and their legs together. Their faces. were pale and still and utterly motionless, eyes closed and lips parted.
“What did you do to them?” I hissed, baring my fangs at the man. “If you hurt my children, I’ll fucking kill you-

“Relax, lady. The kids are fine. They’re just sleeping.”
“He’s telling the truth,” my wolf whispered. Her voice was quiet and faraway and strained as if she were struggling to speak. “Their wolves put them both in stasis. They don’t know what’s happening; they’re dreaming.”
I might have let out a breath of relief had the circumstances been different. At least they were protected, mentally, from this cold reality we suddenly found ourselves in. But we were all still in grave danger.
I subtly glanced down at my waistband–where I normally kept my ruby knife. If I could just command it, then I could get us out of here. Cut my bonds, kill our kidnappers, and find our way back to the compound. The moon was still high in the sky; we couldn’t have been gone for long. Maybe someone was already looking for us.
But my knife wasn’t there. I didn’t see it anywhere.
“Looking for this?” the man asked, holding up my knife. The ruby had been conveniently ripped free from the hilt, rendering the knife no more than a normal knife. I clenched my jaw so hard I almost felt my teeth crunch. The man chuckled and slipped the ruby back into his pocket, then tucked the knife into his belt.
“Where are you taking us?” I asked.
“Where do you think?” the man snorted.
I narrowed my eyes as my mind immediately went to one place and one place only: the Winter King. The rogue leader in the north. Were they taking us to him? Alive?
“Why?” I blurted out, squirming uselessly against my bonds. If I moved too much, the wolf’s spine dug into my belly, which couldn’t be good for the baby. They must have done that on purpose, knowing that I would prioritize my unborn child. Fuckers.
“That’s above my pay grade.” The man tugged the sled over a small bump in the path, jostling the twins. They didn’t stir at all. “All I know is I’m supposed to take you to him–alive and,.. intact.” On that last word, he shot me a lascivious look that made a chill scuttle up my spine, tongue wetting his lips.
I sneered at him, but glanced at the twins again, thinking of what to do. I reached deep down for my wolf’s strength–could I shift and fight back?
But my wolf felt too weak to shift. Whatever had happened to us in Bloodmoon, it had weakened her, at least temporarily. For now, for the twins‘ and my unborn baby’s sake, I might need to comply.
And yet, as the woods thinned and the air grew colder and the distance between us and Bloodmoon got larger and larger, the terror I felt was unlike anything I’d ever experienced before.
“Welp. Here we are,” the man finally said after what felt like an eternity, stopping to adjust the twins in the sled. When he was finished, he walked over to me, grabbed a fistful of my hair, and wrenched my head up so I could see what we had stopped for. A great snowy peak stretched high overhead, its jagged tip piercing the night sky like an enormous white claw reaching into the stars.
“What is that?” I whispered, although deep down, I already knew the answer. There was only one place it could be.
The man grinned and lifted my head higher, pointing way overhead, where a jagged, severe cliff jutted out from the mountainside. I winced at the pain in my neck, but craned my head to look anyway.
“That,” he said, releasing me, “is my home. And soon, if you behave like a good girl, it might just be yours.
