“I’m not leaving my children,” I said.

The guard glanced at the twins, then back at me. “The King has summoned you. You must

The King. Like this asshole actually held any power over me. But right now… I was trapped in his palace. Alone. Maybe I had no choice.
“Fine.” I stomped over to the sled and grabbed the rope. “But I’m bringing them with me.”
Thankfully, the guard didn’t argue. More than anything, he just looked amused at my insistence, and took the rope from my hands. With his free one, he gripped my upper arm tightly and pulled me alongside him, the twins bouncing over the flagstones behind us.
The entire way to our destination, I kept glancing over my shoulder at the twins. They were still asleep. Good. I hoped they stayed asleep until Andrei came for us and we all got the hell out of here. I didn’t want them to recall any of this. They had been traumatized enough for one lifetime.
Finally, we stopped in front of a set of massive double doors. They were carved with intricate designs–wolves running through forests, mountains reaching toward the sky, and at the center, a crown wreathed in ice. I suppressed a shiver at the sight.
The guard released my arm and pushed the doors open. I curled my lip at him and yanked the rope away, dragging the twins along after me.
The throne room was cavernous and cold despite the fires burning in multiple braziers. Columns lined either side of the space, and between them stood more guards—at least a dozen that I could see. They were armed with swords and knives, and I caught the glint of rubies embedded in several hilts, although not all of them.
At the far end of the room, elevated on a dais of black stone, sat a throne. It was carved from a single piece of dark wood, twisted and gnarled like the roots of an ancient tree. And on that throne sat a man.
My breath caught.
What the fuck?
“Natalia.” A familiar voice echoed through the chamber. “I’m glad you made it safely.”
He stood from the throne and descended the steps. He was dressed in fine clothes–black leather and fur, with a heavy cloak draped over his shoulders. A spiked crown of blown glass sat on his head, glinting in the firelight like half–melted ice.
But it was his face that made my stomach drop. Those features I’d known for years. The man who had been my protector, my friend. The man who had held my hand during labor, who had helped me raise the twins for five
years.
“Damon?”
He smiled. “You look surprised.”
“What–how-“I couldn’t form coherent words. My mind was racing, trying to make sense of what I was seeing. “They said you were taken. Andrei’s been looking for you. Grace is so worried about you-”
“Grace.” He said her name like it meant nothing. Like she was nothing. “Yes, I imagine she’s quite distraught.”

The way he spoke sent ice through my veins. This wasn’t right. Damon loved Grace. Why was he speaking about her now like she was a mere amusement and nothing more?
“I don’t understand,” I said, taking a step back. The guard behind me moved, blocking any escape. “What’s happening? Why are you-”
“Sit.” Damon gestured to a chair that had been placed near the throne. When I didn’t move, his expression hardened. “Sit, Natalia. We have much to discuss.”
My legs moved before my brain caught up, carrying me to the chair with the twins pulling along behind me. I just barely perched on the edge of it, keeping my muscles bunched and ready to run. But where would I go? I was surrounded, alone, and with two children and an unborn baby to worry about.
And Damon, the man I had trusted with my life on so many occasions, was looking at me like fresh meat.
“I’m sure you have questions,” he said, sinking into his throne and staring at me down his nose. On the dais, with the flickering braziers casting dark shadows onto the wall behind him, he looked too big, too hulking, too….
monstrous.
I wanted to laugh, but it came out as a strangled, pathetic sound. “I have a lot more than questions, Damon. What is all this?” I gestured to the palace and guards around us.
He leaned on one armrest, almost… lazily. “This is my palace. My home. Don’t you like it?”
“Ashmoor is your home.”
“It was, once. For a time.” He tilted his head and smirked. “But I was always meant to be here. You were always meant to be here with me.”
“What are you talking about?” I whispered.
“This has been years in the making, Natalia. Everything you’ve been through–every attack, every hardship–it was all by design.”
I stared at him. The words didn’t make sense. Couldn’t make sense. He had to be fucking with me.

“Lilith’s capture and return to Moonshadow. The divorce. The car crash.” He lifted his chin. “Why did you think I just happened to be there? Why did you think that Lilith, held captive by rogues for years, would just suddenly return unscathed and on a mission to unseat you from your position in Moonshadow?”
