Chapter 400
Natalia’s POV
That wasn’t Damon.

I couldn’t explain how it was possible, but somehow, the so–called “Winter King” was wearing my friend’s face. He was pretending to be Damon, adopting his mannerisms, his speech… but it wasn’t a perfect disguise.
I had spent five years with Damon. I had been by his side almost every single day during that time. I had seen him at his highest and his lowest–and I knew him as if he were my own brother.
That was not him. This man, this “King“, couldn’t perfectly emulate Damon’s mannerisms. His speech patterns were slightly off, his voice just a touch higher than Damon’s deep timbre. His movements were too haughty, and those eyes…
Those eyes weren’t Damon’s. They were too dark, as if there was another, darker color underneath, hiding just beneath the green.
The realization shot through me like a lance to the chest, and for a heart–stopping moment, I wondered: where the fuck was the real Damon? Was he even still alive?
But I managed to keep my expression calm and controlled. If this man was holding Damon somewhere, perhaps torturing him with some kind of ruby that allowed him to wear his face like a mask, then I needed to be careful. I couldn’t risk him discovering that I knew the truth–for all of our sakes..
My mind raced. I had to figure something out, and quickly. I couldn’t run, not with the twins sleeping, and where would I even go? Out of the palace and over a cliff? I was at the top of a mountain, and there were six inches of snow in all directions. It would be a death sentence.
I couldn’t fight, either. There had to be at least a dozen guards in this room alone, and more than half of them seemed to have ruby weapons. I had lost my knife, and I was outnumbered.
No. I had to be more tactical about this.
The Winter King wanted me. For some reason, he thought that I could produce powerful children with him. He wanted to make me his mate and his slave.
Perhaps I could use that to my advantage. The thought of seducing a man like this made my stomach roil with discomfort, but it was perhaps the only way to survive this long enough for Andrei to come for me.
And he would come for me. I just needed to keep this monster happy, needed to stay alive. Needed to keep the twins alive.

Lifting my chin, I said coolly, “So. Let’s say I do decide to breed with you. What then? Will you lock me up, force me to be your broodmare? Make me raise children I don’t want? Force me to be pregnant over and over again until my womb gives out?”
“Damon’s” eyes flashed with amusement. He nodded toward my belly, where a slight swell had formed over the months. “There’s no need for that. With the rubies at our disposal, we can speed up the pregnancy process. I assure you, it will be harmless to you and the children. Each pregnancy will only last a few days, if that. And with our genes, we’ll only need to produce twenty, perhaps less.”
Twenty pregnancies. Like I was some kind of fucking animal meant to be bred until I die; nevermind the fact that his rubies could allegedly speed the pregnancies up. I didn’t even want to think about how horrific that would feel, my body growing and stretching with the change of a nine–month pregnancy in the span of just a few days.

But I kept my face cool. Calm. Open, even. As if I were actually considering his abominable offer.
“And the deliveries?” I asked, cocking my head to one side. “Twenty pregnancies is a lot of labor, even if you can shorten the gestation. My body could break before you’ve decided that we’ve had enough children.”
