My throat tightened. “Damon-
“I’m already dead, Natalia. It’s just taking a while. At least this way, I could’ve taken him with me.”
“You’re not dead,” I said firmly.
Damon ignored me. “That room. The one with all the soldiers. Use it there. It’ll blow the whole thing. Kill them all before they can be used.”
I looked down at the ruby in my hand. It was small, maybe the size of a walnut. How much damage could something this tiny do?
“How does it work?”
“Break it.” Damon’s voice was getting weaker. “Smash it against something hard. You’ll have maybe thirty seconds to run before it goes off. The blast radius is… big. Make sure you’re far away.”
Thirty seconds. I could work with that. But the thought of going back to that room, seeing all those people in their cases, and then…
“They’re innocent people,” I whispered.
“They’re not people anymore.” Damon opened his eyes again, and they were hard as emeralds. I knew that look all too well; I had seen it in Andrei’s eyes before. The determination.
I knew he was right. I’d seen it myself–those blank stares, those empty eyes. But still. They had been babies once. Children. And now I was supposed to murder them all because some monster decided to play god.
“I don’t know if I can do this,” I admitted.
“You can.” Damon’s hand reached through the bars, grabbing mine. His grip was weak, but it was still strong enough to squeeze my fingers. “You’re the strongest person I know, Natalia. You’ve survived hell already. You’ll survive this too.”
I squeezed his hand back, feeling tears prick at my eyes. “Andrei will find a way to save you. He won’t give up.”
“Tell him…” Damon’s voice cracked. “Tell him I’m sorry. For everything. Tell him he was always the better brother.”
“Shut up.” I pulled my hand away and stood. “You’re going to tell him yourself.”
Damon didn’t respond to that. He simply shut his eyes again and drifted off to sleep, too exhausted to continue talking.
I tucked the explosive ruby carefully into the pocket of my stolen robes. I took one last look at Damon, slumped against the wall, the rubies slowly draining what little life he had left. Then, I grabbed the food tray and shuffled back down the corridor, keeping my head down and my spine hunched. The guard at the door barely glanced at me as I passed.
The walk back to my suite felt like it took hours. Every person I passed made my heart lurch. Every guard made me certain I was about to be discovered. But no one stopped me. No one even looked at me twice.

The ruby burned in my pocket the entire way. I kept thinking about that room. All those glass cases. All those blank faces. Three hundred and forty–seven people who used to be babies. They hadn’t even had a chance to live.
Could I really kill them all?
Damon was right–they weren’t people anymore. But they had been. And they never asked for any of this. Never chose to become monsters. That bastard made them into this. Took their lives and twisted them into something unrecognizable before they’d even formed thoughts.
But if I didn’t destroy them, Andrei and everyone else would die fighting them. The Winter King would use them to slaughter entire packs. To take over everything. And then he’d make more. Use me to make more.
My hand moved to my belly, where my unborn child was growing. Would he do the same thing to this baby? Age it in minutes, turn it into one of those empty shells?
The thought made fresh bile rise in my throat.
Finally, I reached my suite and paused outside the door. Oddly, my guard wasn’t there anymore, but I kept up the facade anyway, just in case I was being watched.
I pushed the door open, stepping inside quickly. The room was dark except for the dying fire in the hearth. I moved toward the bed to check on the twins-
But a hand clamped over my mouth before I could reach it.
