I reached for it carefully, afraid it might slip away if I grabbed too hard. It pulsed once, twice, like a heartbeat. Then, a sudden sensation washed over me–strength. Speed. Primal power.

But just before I could reach out, just before I could grasp that power and use it, a voice brought me back to the present moment.

“Do you, Natalia of Bloodmoon, take this man to be your husband?” the priest was asking in that flat, empty voice, words slurring over a tongue that was too short and teeth that were malformed. The teeth of a child forced into an adult’s skull. “To honor and obey, in sickness and in health, until death—”

“No. I—”

I couldn’t finish.

The Winter King wouldn’t let me.

He spun me toward him and dipped his head—a head that didn’t belong to him but rather the man I loved, the only man I would ever truly call my husband. My mate.

But his face was wrong. His teeth were bared in a vicious snarl, revealing too many, too jagged. His eyes were dark and dangerous.

“Don’t you dare,” he hissed.

And then he pressed his lips to mine.

The disgust that shot through me was so sudden and intense that I felt the familiar taste of vomit rising in my throat, heat and acid burning the back of my tongue. In a panic, I bit down on his lower lip as hard as I could.

The King jerked his head back, tongue darting out to taste the blood, but he didn’t release his iron grip on my waist. Rather, his eyes narrowed, then began to flicker with a malicious hunger.

“Feisty,” he whispered, leaning close again for another kiss. His breath smelled like fetid water mixed with the coppery tang of fresh blood. “I’ve always liked that about you, my love-”

“I am not yours.”

Reaching deep for my wolf’s strength again, this time, I managed to grasp it. It only lasted for a moment, but it was just enough time, just enough strength, to press my palms flat against that monster’s chest and shove him as hard as I could.

My muscles burned as I sent him flying backwards, slamming into one of the glass cases and sprawling across the floor. The glass spiderwebbed with three crooked cracks, but it didn’t break. It was too thick.

For a moment, as he lay still on the floor, I felt a surge of hope in my chest. He wasn’t moving. His eyes were closed. I took a halting step forward, then another. The crippled creations behind me remained still. The ones in the cases only stared, waiting for their master’s command. A command that might never come now.

Was he…?

No. He wasn’t.

Green eyes that weren’t quite right snapped open. The Winter King began to struggle to his feet, dark hair that wasn’t his flopping into his face, which was shadowed with fury. Pushing a strand out of his eyes, he straightened and pointed at the “priest“.

“Finish the ceremony,” he snarled, shooting me a look that could kill. “The bitch made a promise. She’ll go through with it.“.

With that, he moved toward me again, one of the rings on his hand flashing. His arm moved with preternatural grace and speed, but somehow, I managed to step out of the way just in time.

“No!” I reached into my pocket and withdrew the explosive ruby. Lifting my chin, I held it over my head and met his gaze steadily. “If you force me to marry you, I’ll blow all of us up. Right here.” I lifted the ruby a little higher. ” Right now.”
