Try,I said.

My wolf seemed to stand on shaky legs, stretching her aching bones and limbs. She’d been so weak since we had been taken from Bloodmoon; I still wondered what, exactly, I had been drugged with when I was taken. Something derived from the rubies, perhaps? Or something else?

Still, I felt her move toward the well of power that sat deep within the recesses of my mind. I felt her presence ebb and flow like the tide, and it took great effort for her to reach it, but eventually, she managed.

I am looking now

What do you see?

Can’tspeakLet me showyou

Before I could respond, I felt my mind slip into hers like two puzzle pieces slotting together. Suddenly, I saw what she saw: that deep pool of power. It was endless, fathomless. I couldn’t make out what exactly it contained, if anything at all. It was like a puddle filled with space and stars; endless, boundless, but also as empty as a void.

And yet, as I looked into it, I began to see shapes moving across the darkness.

Have you ever looked into a mirror in a dark room for a long time? Eventually, you begin tosee things. Your face shifting, morphing into monstrous features. Figures floating behind you, hands reaching for you, things that aren’t really there but your mind swears they are.

That was what this felt like.

I wanted to look away, but I couldn’t. I was entranced. The shapes morphed and changed, shifted from incoherent blobs to more tangible visions. Children running through gardens. Two babies born, one first, then the other, with dark hair and clenched fists. Lines on a pregnancy test. A warrior flying away from me, slamming into a post in the distance.

As the moments flitted by, one after the other, an awareness began to wash over me; each one was a memory. And each memory involved my children, both current and unborn.

I saw myself cradling the twins, protecting the swell of my belly. I saw hands moving, knives glinting. I saw my fangs extend and, as I looked upon my own reflection, I saw the fury of a mother scorned.

My children. It was always about them, wasn’t it?

Protecting them.

In those moments, as I looked upon memory after memory like an unending movie reel, I felt it again; a surge of strength. It was brief, but it was there. Without hesitating, Istood and turned, and I slammed my bloodied fist against the glass one last time.

The material spiderwebbed, crackling like the surface of a pond when you put too much weight on the thin ice.

And then it shattered.

I leapt backwards, shielding the twins with my body while shards of glass rained down on us. Only when it finally stopped did I dare to look up. The case was broken; we could leave.

Gasping, I jerked my head toward the crippled servants, half expecting them to attack. But they didn’t move. They just stared at me.

I swore I saw that flicker in the priest’s eyes again.

Help me,I whispered.

The servants hesitated. I didn’t think they would do it; didn’t think they even could. But then, slowly, shakily, the priest took a step. The book fell from his twisted hands, suddenly slack, and plopped to the floor with a dull thud.

I stood but remained close by as the servants hobbled over to me. The priest stood in front of me while the two others sat down on either side of the twins. My eyes widened when I saw the tips of blades poking out of their trailing sleeves, but when I moved toward them, the priest placed a gnarled hand on my arm.

Safe,he muttered.

I blinked in surprise. You can talk?

The priest nodded. Just barely, his eyes seemed to say. But not enough. The King made sure of that.

I bit my lip, looking around. I have to kill the King,I said.

The priest bobbed his head again. Then, wordlessly, he toddled over to the book and picked it up, flipping to a page in the middlea chunk had been cut out of the pages, leaving a small recess within the book.

In it was a small arrow, no more than three inches long, with a razorsharp red tip.

He held it out to me, and I sliced it across my palm, watching as the ruby flared to life.
