Chapter 450

“You bitch!” he roared behind me,
f burst out of the room and into the hallway, my bare feet slapping against the cold stone. I had no idea where I was going just ran. Left, then right, then left again. The palace was a maze of dark corridors and empty rooms, I stumbled on my aching legs, but I kept going.
Behind me, I could hear the King shouting. The sound of his shoes slamming against the floor as he chased after
me,
My lungs burned. My legs trembled. Every step sent pain shooting through my body.
And yet I kept going.
I turned another corner and found myself in a narrower passage. The walls began to press in on either side, and the ceiling was so low I had to duck. My baby started to cry from the sudden movement; her wails would give away our location.
“Shh, shh,” I whispered desperately. “Please, baby, please be quiet.” But it wasn’t enough. The King, hearing us, bellowed again. I could hear his footsteps pounding closer.
I kept running, one hand pressed against my daughter’s back, the other trailing along the wall to keep my balance in the darkness. The passage twisted and turned, sloping downward.
Finally, it opened into a massive chamber. I stumbled to a stop, my eyes struggling to adjust. The air here was different. Hot. Almost suffocating, and it smelled sulphuric. I took a cautious step forward, squinting into the darkness. What was this place?
Before I could figure it out, rough hands grabbed me from behind. I screamed and tried to twist away, but the King’s grip was like iron.
“Did you really think you could escape?” he hissed in my ear. His breath was hot and foul just like the air in here. “Did you really think I would let you go?”
“Let me go!” I thrashed against him, but he was too strong. My body was too weak, too damaged from labor. ” Please, I’ll do anything, just don’t-”
“Silence.” He spun me around and grabbed my face, his fingers digging into my cheeks. My baby was screaming now, her cries bouncing off the cavern walls. “You’ve made a grave mistake tonight.”
He grabbed my arm and started dragging me back the way I’d come. I stumbled and nearly fell, but he yanked me upright.
“Stop,” I begged. “Please, you’re hurting me-”
“You should have thought of that before you attacked me.” His voice was cold. “Before you tried to run away with my future.”
“She’s not yours! She’s my daughter!”
He didn’t respond. He just kept dragging me through the passages, back toward the bedroom. When we reached it, he shoved me inside so hard I fell to the floor. I curled around my baby, protecting her from the impact, and

The King loomed over me, eyes gleaming in the torchlight. “If you disobey me again,” he said quietly, “I will hurt your child. No more chances. Do you understand?”
I stared up at him, my entire body shaking,
“Do you understand?” he repeated.
“Yes,” I whispered.
“Good.” He turned and walked to the door. “I’m going to give you one more chance to calm down and accept your place here. But when I return, you will give me what I want.”
With that, he stepped out into the hallway and pulled the door shut behind him. I heard the sound of a lock clicking into place, and then I was alone. Trapped.
I stayed there on the floor for some time, clutching my crying baby, and felt something inside of me break. I would never stop fighting, never stop trying to escape, but the hope I’d been holding onto suddenly formed a crack in the surface.
The King was going to come back. And when he did, I didn’t know if I’d be able to stop him.
