Chapter 452
“Natalia…”
“Don’t worry about her. Just focus on staying alive.”
He tried to say something else, but it came out as a wet cough. Blood flecked his lips, and his eyes rolled back.
The hours that followed were a blur. I stayed by Damon’s side whille Grace worked tirelessly. She tried everything, employed every method she knew–stitching, cauterizing, packing the wound with herbs and gauze.
Nothing worked. The bleeding wouldn’t stop. My brother grew more pale and more feverish by the moment; his body was holding on by a thread.
All the while, Damon drifted in and out of consciousness. When he was awake, he usually mumbled incoherently, completely delirious. Sometimes he called out for Grace, and she would make a sound of distress and continue working more frantically.
A few times, he said Natalia’s name. Once, he asked for our mother, although she had been gone for many years.
And once, he said my name. “Andrei…” His lips were moving, but I couldn’t make out what he was saying. I had to lean close, wrinkling my nose at the scent of blood, to hear what he had to say.
“Take care of Grace,” he whispered, cold lips brushing my ear. “Promise… me.”
I pulled my head back. “No.You’re going to be fine, just like you were when you took that axe to the chest,” I said. “You’re going to take care of her yourself.”
“Promise me.”
“Damon-”
“Promise.”
I grit my teeth. “I promise.” The words tasted like ash, but I forced them out anyway, if only to get him to rest.
He smiled weakly and closed his eyes.
By dawn, his breathing had grown shallower. His skin was gray, his lips blue. Grace had stopped working and was now just sitting beside him, holding his other hand. Tears streamed down her face, but she didn’t sob.
“There’s nothing more I can do,” she whispered. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to tear the tent apart. But I just sat there, holding my brother’s hand, watching him. die.
He took one final, rattling breath. Then his chest went still.
The tent fell silent.
“No,” I said. “No, no, no.” I shook his shoulder. “Damon. Damon, wake up.”
Nothing.

“Damon!” I shook him harder. “Wake up!”
Grace put her hand on my arm. “Andrei-”
I jerked away from her and stood. My vision blurred. My chest felt like it was caving in.
Damon was dead.
My brother was dead.
First Natalia. Now Damon.
I stumbled backward, my hands shaking. I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think.
“Andrei,” Grace choked out. “Wait, you need to-”
I didn’t stay to hear the rest. I turned and shoved my way out of the tent. The cold morning air stung my face, but I barely felt it. I walked blindly through camp, my hands clenched into fists. Warriors moved out of my way, their faces blurring together. I didn’t see any of their features–only one face swimming in front of my eyes behind the haze of red and fury.
The King.
That fucking monster had done this. He’d killed Natalia. He’d killed Damon. He’d destroyed everything I loved.
And if he was still alive somewhere in those caves, I was going to find him. I was going to tear him apart with my
bare hands.
I made it to the edge of camp before I heard Grace shouting behind me.
“Andrei! Stop! You need to come back!”
I didn’t stop. I shifted mid–stride. My wolf surged forward, taking over, and I ran.
The snow crunched beneath my paws. The wind howled in my ears. But all I could hear was the sound of Damon’s final breath. All I could see was Natalia’s face as she fell.
Grace’s voice faded behind me, swallowed by the storm.
I didn’t look back.
The only thing in my heart now was vengeance. And I wouldn’t stop until the King’s dead body was at my feet.
