Before I could completely fathom it, the ring stopped glowing again and the image vanished completely this time. I was myself once more, my baby looked like a baby again, and my head was spinning even worse now. The effort had drained me. I slumped back against the bed, completely exhausted now.

So the ring could swap my appearance with another, but only for short periods of time and with immense effort. And in my current state, it was extremely draining to use. I wasn’t sure how this could be useful to me, but I slipped the ring between my breasts for safekeeping and laid my baby back down in her bassinet.

Somehow, I finally fell asleep–probably just from the exhaustion of trying to nurse a baby and use the ruby in a malnourished body. Thankfully, the King never returned. I slept peacefully and dreamlessly, but not for long enough.

When I woke, the fire had burned low and my baby was crying again with hoarse, raspy little whimpers that hardly made sounds at all in her parched throat.

I stumbled out of bed and managed to get her to my chest, where I tried nursing her one more time. She latched onto my nipple and suckled, but I could tell that there was almost nothing there. She pulled away after a few seconds and started crying again, clenching her little fists like she was angry at the world.

“Please,” I begged, tilting her head toward my breast once more. “Please just try. There has to be something left”

But she wouldn’t. She just kept crying, and I just kept failing her.

Just then, I heard footsteps in the hallway. I knew it was him before the door even opened, and I quickly covered myself. He stepped into the room dressed in fresh, clean robes and had a smile on his face that was almost impish.

“Good morning, my love,” he said. “Are you ready for your surprise?”

I clutched my baby closer. “What is it?” I croaked.

He crossed the room and stood over me. “You will see. Bring the child. I think you’ll find today’s surprise very… enlightening.”

I really didn’t want to, but I forced myself to stand, then followed the King out of the room. I didn’t bother to change out of my nightgown. I didn’t have the strength.

We walked for what felt like forever. Down one corridor, then another. He didn’t offer me an arm to lean on–he wanted me to struggle, wanted me to weaken so he could better manipulate me. Not that I would have accepted the help had he offered it, anyway. Instead, I pressed my free hand against the stones and refused to fall.

It didn’t take long for me to realize where we were going: back to that chamber with the poisoned water. I clutched my baby against my chest, tugging her swaddle up around her nose and mouth so the fabric would hopefully filter out some of the chemicals. I doubted it would help much, but it was better than nothing.

Sure enough, the hallway eventually opened into the massive cavern. I stopped in the doorway, refusing to take another step toward that fetid water.

The King walked to the edge of the water and stopped. Then, he turned to me and smiled.

“I have a gift for you, my love,” he said, waving his hand. One of his rubies flashed, and I heard the rattling of chains. “Something to help you understand that your old life is over. That your mate is gone, and you belong to me now.”

“What are you talking about?” I whispered.

He pointed up.

I followed his gesture, squinting through the steam. Slowly, something descended from above. A cage, hanging over the water, suspended by enormous chains on a pulley system. And inside of it was a man, slumped against

the bars.

Dark hair hung into his eyes. His head lolled, his body unmoving.

It was Andrei.
