Chapter 462

I forced my eyes open. The world was blurry at first, but slowly, everything came into focus.

I was in a tent. Medical supplies were scattered on a table nearby. And sitting beside me with her hand wrapped around mine was Grace.

Her eyes were red and puffy from crying. Her hair was a mess. She looked like she hadn’t slept in days, but she was still the most beautiful creature I’d ever seen.

Damon?she whispered when she saw my eyes open. Her voice cracked. Oh, Goddess. Damon.

I tried to speak, but my throat was too dry. The sound that came out was more of a croak.

Grace grabbed a cup of water from the table and held it to my lips. Drink. Slowly.

The water hurt going down, but it helped. After a few sips, I managed to rasp out two words. Whathappened?

You died. For five minutes.Grace set the cup down and pressed her other hand over her mouth. Tears streamed down her face freely now. I wasn’t sure if I’d ever seen her cry like this before. Your heart stopped. We thoughtI thought you were gone. But we managed to bring you back.

Died. I’d actually died. That explained the darkness. The floating. The choice between the light and Grace’s voice.

How long?I asked.

Three days since you were shot. Your heart stopped yesterday. She wiped at her eyes with the back of her hand. You shouldn’t be awake yet. You should be resting. You lost so much blood, and the wound-

Andrei,I interrupted. Where’s Andrei?

Grace’s expression changed. The relief faded, replaced by worry and anguish. He left. Yesterday, after you- after your heart stopped. He justran off. Another blizzard came, and we lost his trail. Andrei, I think he’s

They’re alive,I said. Both of them. Natalia and Andrei. They’re alive, and they’re in danger.

Grace blinked at me. What? How do you-

I saw them.I tried to sit up, but the pain in my chest was like a knife twisting. Still, I gritted my teeth and sat up anyway, waving Grace’s hands away when she tried to stop me. I saw them, Grace. And if I don’t go after them right now, they’re going to die down there.

Down where? Damon, you’re delirious.Grace moved to push me back down onto the cot, but I grabbed her

wrist.

I’m not. My brother needs me. Natalia needs me. That baby needs me.I swung my legs over the side of the cot, ignoring the way the world spun around me and the intense agony in my chest. I’m going after them, with or without help.

You’re insane. You’ll die.

Maybe.I forced myself to stand. My legs trembled, and I had to grip the edge of the cot to keep from falling, but I somehow managed to stay upright. But I’d rather die trying than sit here while they suffer.

Grace tried to stop me, but I wouldn’t listen. Finally, she gave up trying. She wrapped my chest tightly and gave me a dose of medicine that would probably kill a horse. It gave me a little strength, just enough to squeeze my aching body into leathers and prepare my weapons. Every movement was pain

When I emerged from the tent, a crowd had gathered. Warriors. They’d heard about my plan. They all thought I was insane, too, but they followed me as I led the journey toward the caves.

As we approached the caves, the map that had formed in my mind crystallized. I stopped at the mouth, peering into the darkness. Grace, standing beside me, clutched my arm.

You’re sure about this?she whispered, looking up at me.

I nodded curtly and pulled my handkerchief up around my nose and mouth. I know the way.

And so I stumbled into the caves, half dead but hell bent on saving my brother. On saving Natalia. And on saving the baby that still had no name.
