Chapter 466
The King crossed the distance between us in two strides. He grabbed me by the throat and lifted me off the ground, sliding my back against the pillar. I clawed at his hand, but my fingers were numb and useless.
“Clever,” he hissed, “Very clever. But not clever enough.”
He slammed me into the stone floor. My head cracked against the rock, and everything went dark.
When I came to, the first thing I heard was my baby crying
I forced my eyes open. My head was pounding, and every part of my body hurt. I was lying on the stone floor near the edge of the water, so close my hair was dipping into the surface. The King was standing a few feet away with his back to me.
He was holding something. Something small and squirming
My baby.
He had her by the ankle, dangling her upside down over the poisoned water. Her cries echoed through the chamber, shrill and terrified and in pain.
“No,” I croaked. I tried to push myself up, but my arms gave out. “No, please-”
The King turned to look at me. His face was calm. Almost serene. “You made a fool of me,” he said quietly, “You pretended to submit. You kissed my boot. You made me believe you were finally coming around to your purpose.”
“Please. Please don’t hurt her.”
“I gave you so many chances.” He held my baby out further over the water. She screamed, her little arms flailing. “I showed you mercy. I gave you time with your child. I even let you say goodbye to your wretched mate. And this is how you repay me?”
“I’m sorry.” The words tasted like bile, but I forced them out. “I’m sorry. I’ll do anything. Just don’t–”
“I bore of your empty promises.” The King’s fingers loosened slightly on my baby’s ankle. She slipped an inch, and my heart stopped. “Once, I wanted to give you a palace, a kingdom, all the jewels and power and wealth a woman could have wanted. But you failed me, and now you’ll watch her die, and then I’ll chain you to the bed and make you breed until your pathetic body gives out.”
Something inside of me snapped when he said those words, when I saw my baby lowering closer toward the water. Not rage. Not fear. Something deeper, something primal, and something that even the rubies hidden in the walls of this mountain couldn’t hold back.
Power surged through me. It filled my chest, my throat, building like the pressure behind a dam that was set to burst. It was the same power I’d felt when I’d shattered the glass, only more.
I opened my mouth, and the scream that came out shattered the world.
The sound tore through the chamber like a tornado. A gust of wind erupted from my mouth, sending the King stumbling backward, eyes widening in shock. His heels slipped on the edge of the pool, and he began to fall, arms windmilling to the sides. His grip on my baby’s ankle loosened, and he dropped her. They began to fall.

Together.
Everything happened in slow motion. The King collapsed backwards with nothing to catch him. My baby plummeted toward the poisoned surface of the water.
And then, from my peripherals, a blur moved.
Andrei launched himself across the stone floor with one hand outstretched. The King fell backward with a splash that sent up clouds of acrid steam. But Andrei caught my baby caught her with one hand while he used the other to brace himself against the edge of the pool. The tops of her dark hairs brushed the water, but she didn’t submerge. He snatched her close and held her against his chest.
Safe.
The King thrashed, gasping for air and crying out with guttural bellows like the brays of a great beast. The water was too deep, the steam too hot, his armor too heavy, Scrabbling at the surface of the water, he held his hand out to me with desperation in his eyes,
“Please… My love… Show mercy…”
I stood on trembling legs. My entire body ached, but I wasn’t finished. I extended my leg and placed my boot on top of his head.
“Fuck… You,” I whispered. Then, I pushed him below the surface. Even as the heat singed my flesh through my boot, 1 kept pressing. I pressed and I pressed until the bubbles stopped.
And I didn’t let go until the water went still, and the chamber fell silent.
