“I thought I’d lost you,” he whispered into my hair. “When you fell, I thought-‘

“”

“I know. I’m sorry.” I pulled back to look at him. “Are you okay? Grace said the fumes messed with your head.”

“I’m fine now. It took a while for my head to clear, but I’m better.” He cupped my face in his hands. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

A small cry interrupted us. I turned and saw Grace standing near another cot, holding a tiny bundle. Hope. My baby. Our baby..

Grace brought her over and placed her in my arms. Hope blinked up at me with those dark green eyes, her little face scrunched up like she was about to cry again. But then she seemed to recognize me, and her expression smoothed out.

I held her close and kissed her forehead. She was warm and soft and perfect. “Hi, baby,” I whispered. “Hi, Hope.”

Andrei reached out and stroked her cheek with one finger. “Hope,” he repeated. “It fits her, don’t you think?”

I nodded, grinning so widely it hurt. The tent flap opened again, and two small figures burst inside. Jane and Max. They stopped when they saw me, their eyes going wide.

“Mommy!” Jane shrieked. She ran across the tent and threw herself at me. I barely managed to shift Hope out of the way before Jane crashed into my side.

“Hi, princess.” I wrapped my free arm around her and pulled her close. “I missed you so much.” Max approached more cautiously. He looked at me, then at Andrei, then at the baby in my arms.

“Is that our sister?” he asked.

“Yes. This is Hope.” I adjusted Hope so the twins could see her better. “Do you want to meet her?”

Jane nodded enthusiastically. Max hesitated, then nodded too. They both crowded closer, peering down at Hope’s tiny face.

“She’s so small,” Jane whispered.

“You were that small once,” Andrei said. He reached out and ruffled Max’s hair. “Both of you were, although I never got to see it.”

“She’s Max’s spitting image from when he was that age,” I said.

Lips parting, Max reached out tentatively and touched Hope’s hand. Her tiny fingers immediately wrapped around his, gripping tightly. His eyes widened. “She’s strong,” he noted.

“She is,” I agreed. “She’s going to be just like her big brother and sister.”

Eventually, Grace shooed the twins out so Andrei and I could rest. She took Hope too, promising to bring her back in a few hours for another feeding. The tent fell quiet.

Chapter 470

Andrei shifted on the cot, making room for me. I climbed up beside him carefully, mindful of both our injuries. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close with my back against his chest.

“I can’t believe we made it out,” he murmured into my hair. “I really thought we were going to die down there.”

“So did I.” I laced my fingers through his where they rested on my stomach. “But we didn’t. We survived.”

He glanced at me. “Did he… Did he ever…”

“Touch me?” I whispered. My chest ached with the memories, but I shook my head. “He never got the chance.” Andrei let out a breath of relief. He was quiet for a moment, and then he pressed a kiss to the top of my head. ” I’m sorry I wasn’t there sooner.”

“You came as soon as I could.” I looked up at him. “How did you know?” I asked. “That I was still alive.”

His jaw tightened. “I didn’t. Max did.” Andrei told me everything–how Max insisted I was still alive and ran off into the blizzard. How Max had been the one to find the cave first.

The thought made tears spring to my eyes, but I didn’t let them fall this time. There was no need to cry. Not now. Not when everything felt… right.

For a long time, we just lay there together, listening to the sounds of the camp outside. Voices, footsteps, the crackling of fires. Normal sounds. Safe sounds.

Finally, my eyes grew heavy. I didn’t resist the urge to sleep; after everything that had happened, falling asleep in my mate’s arms was all I wanted. It was moments like this that I had imagined when I was alone, after all.

So I shut my eyes and let myself rest, falling into a peaceful slumber to the tune of Andrei’s beating heart.
