Chapter 477

Natalia’s POV

We moved back into the main house that same night. It was one of the few buildings still standing on the estate, although the roof had a hole in it and half of the windows on the main floor were shattered. But it had walls and beds and a door that locked, which was more than most people had right now, so I wasn’t complaining.

Besides, with everyone back, I was sure we would be able to get things in order in no time.

That night, Andrei barely slept. He came to bed late, claiming that he had work to do but that he would be up soon. I woke up several times during the night to find his side of the bed empty. The clock ticked later and later, and he never came to bed like he said he would.

After the third time waking up to find his pillow still untouched and cold, I grew worried. I climbed out of bed, my body aching, and pulled on my robe. I could hear voices coming from downstairs, so I padded down to the den and found him there, pacing the room while his Beta sat in an armchair, looking exhausted.

What are you doing?I asked, folding my arms in the doorway.

Andrei stopped and looked at me. We’re discussing repair plans for the main community hall in town. Most of the civilians moved there after the most recent battle, but there are holes in the roof.

The Alpha thinks we should patch the roof first before getting started on rebuilding individual homes.

That’s a great idea,I said, glancing at the clock on the mantle, but it’s three o’clock in the morning. You should both be resting.

Andrei’s Beta sighed and gave me a look that said that he had been trying to convince Andrei of the same thing for hours now, to no avail. Finally, I just took Andrei’s hand and dragged him to bed. To his credit, he did pass out pretty quickly, so exhausted from traveling and everything else that he couldn’t keep his eyes open.

But by the time I woke early the next morning, he was already gone, his side of the bed made and cold. After

searching for him for over an hour, I finally found him in the town square with a group of men directing them on

the building efforts for the community center.

You were up early,I pointed out, coming to stand beside him.

He shrugged. Lots of work to do.

Sticking around long enough for a family breakfast wouldn’t kill you, though. Even Grace and Damon stayed for that, and they just left to return to Ashmoor with half the Bloodmoon refugees. Have you even eaten yet today? The sidelong glance he shot me was all the answer I needed. I rolled my eyes, though there was little heat in the gesture, and handed him a breakfast sandwich and a thermos of coffee that I had brought for this very reason. Then, I pointed to a nearby bench.

Sit down and eat that, at least. Then you can spend all day working for all I care.

Yes, ma’am,Andrei laughed. A faint smile tugged at his lips as he leaned down to press a kiss to my cheek. He ate his sandwich as instructed, but immediately jumped back into work the moment the last bite was in his mouth.

The days that followed were more of the same. Andrei threw himself into rebuilding like a man possessed. He worked from dawn until well past dark, coordinating efforts, settling disputes, making decisions about resources and priorities. He barely ate, barely slept, barely had time for anything except pack business.

But I didn’t try to stop him. He seemed to need this normalcy, if one could even call it thatthrowing himself

into his Alpha duties. And the pack really did need him. I would have been right alongside him, honestly, if my body weren’t still recovering from everything.

The twins, for their part, adjusted quickly. Jane wanted to help with everything, running errands for the workers and playing with the other children who had lost their homes. Max followed Andrei around like a little shadow. It was really cute, seeing him scurry behind Andrei, carrying folders or little things that Andrei let him hold onto to make himself feel important.
