Chapter 479
Andrei’s POV
The day was long and exhausting. I spent most of it coordinating the rebuild of the southern barracks, then meeting with supply runners about another batch of food for the refugees. By the time the sun started to dip below the trees, I had almost forgotten about the strange vision I’d had in Bloodmoon.
Almost. But not completely.
The work couldn’t seem to wipe that memory from my mind, no matter how hard I had been trying over the past few days. I couldn’t sleep because of it. The only thing that could distract me from it was work.
And so I worked. And worked. And worked until I was certain Natàlia was going to throttle me for not being around her and the kids more.
But what was I supposed to do? Every time I looked at them, I saw that vision. It hadn’t happened again, but it didn’t matter. It still stuck in my mind like a bad ex, and it scared the hell out of me. The last thing I wanted after all we had been through was to watch my family suffer even more, especially by my own hands.
Eventually, I finished up work around dusk and headed back to the house, too tired to keep going for the day. It was almost dinnertime by then anyway, and I knew Natalia would never forgive me if I missed it, so I sucked up my emotions and stepped inside. The moment I did, I heard humming coming from upstairs. Natalia’s voice.
I followed the sound down the hall and found her in the spare room. She was standing on a stepstool, painting little white dots on the yellow walls. Stars. The room was bright and cheerful, completely transformed from the dull gray it had been before, with moons and clouds painted everywhere.
She looked so peaceful. Paint–stained fingers, hair pulled back in a messy ponytail, completely absorbed in what she was doing. It made something in my chest loosen for the first time in… I couldn’t even remember.
This was what I wanted for her. For all of us. Peace. Normalcy. A life that we should have had a long time ago. For so long I had wanted nothing more than this, and with the war coming to an end, it was finally within reach.
For a few moments, I leaned against the doorframe and just watched her work, not wanting to interrupt this rare moment of peace. She added another star, then stepped back to examine it. A small smile crossed her face.
“Well? What do you think?” she asked when she finally noticed
I opened my mouth to tell her that it looked perfect. I moved to take a step toward her so I could pull her into my arms and hold her tight and tell her I loved her and that I was sorry for not being more present lately.
But then it happened again.
The yellow walls turned gray. The paint on Natalia’s hands turned red. Blood. It was dripping down her arms through large gashes that ran along her veins, then pooled at her feet. And she was looking at me with those same empty eyes I’d seen before.
Dead eyes. Head lolling to one side, cut halfway through like a beheading gone wrong.
“Andrei?” she said. Her lips moved limply, like a puppet on strings. Her voice sounded… off. Empty. Not really
hers.
I looked down, and saw my hands clutching blades with that same blood dripping from the tips. I tried to open my fingers, but they wouldn’t move. I couldn’t let go of the knives. I couldn’t stop killing her.
Couldn’t stop cutting her.

Natalia’s POV
I set down my paintbrush and crossed the room to him. He was staring at his hands like they belonged to someone else.
“Hey.” I touched his arm and he flinched. “You good?”
