Natalia’s POV

You’re worried about me?I blurted out, nearly laughing at the incredulity of it. Your face looks like-

I cut myself off before I could finish, and flushed.

Isaac smiled. I’ve had worse. Really, I’m fine. It’s you I’ve been worried about.

I blinked at Isaac. I hardly knew this guy enough to recognize him on the street, let alone enough for him to worry about me. But I supposed it was an atypical situation. The last he’d seen me, my husband had been beating him nearit senseless

Yeah, I’mI trailed off, then cleared my throat. I’m okay. Thank you for asking.

Isaac gestured to the buildings around us. Why don’t we grab a coffee or something?

A coffee.

He nodded, and smiled, making the wounds on his face crinkle slightly. If you’re interested, of course.

I hesitated. The last thing I needed was to be seen with Isaac again, if Andrei was still beingirrational. But after that mad dash through the streets, I supposed sitting down for a while and enjoying the warm air could be a good thing

We walked to a small cafe near the market. I found a table for us on the sidewalk while Isaac went inside to order coffees. To my shock, he returned with an entire tray of foodorange juice and finger sandwiches for the twins; a cup of coffee for himself, and, shockingly, my favorite cafe order of all time.

My eyes widened as he set the tray down on the table. Isaac, you didn’t have toHow did you know this is my favorite?I picked up the vanilla chai latte, which was iced, perfect after chasing my son through the streets like a madwoman.

Isaac grinned and took a seat opposite me. Lucky guess, I suppose. He leaned close to the twins. You two look hungry, so I got you some treats. I hope you like them.

Jane gasped at the finger sandwiches and immediately snatched one that appeared to contain some kind of jam. Thank you!she exclaimed.

Max didn’t touch his food. Just sat there, pouting with his arms crossed.

Isaac watched them for a moment before turning to me. They’re beautiful kids.

Thank you.

The boy’s got spirit. He nodded toward Max. Reminds me of myself at that age. Stubborn as hell.

Despite everything, I laughed. That’s one word for it.

Hope started fussing then. I leaned over, cooing at her and adjusting her blanket. The moment I gave her her

bottle, though, she quieted down. When I looked up again, Isaac was still smiling, but the sight made me wince. His wounds looked even worse in the sunlight.

I’m not angry, you know. About what happened.

I looked up at him. You should be.

Maybe. But I’m not.He set down his cup. I’m worried about you, though.

You don’t need to worry about me.

He’s not hurting you?His voice was low so only I could hear.

I stared at him. No. Of course he’s not hurting me,I said quickly. Andrei would never hurt me.

You’re sure?

My lips parted, but no words came out. Of course Andrei wouldn’t hurt me. He would neverBut then I thought about the moment in the training ring, when he’d nearly throttled the life from me. That haunted, empty look in his eyes, like he was somewhere else entirely

I cleared my throat and looked at Isaac again. Andrei is going through a lot right now. But yes, I’m sure that he would never hurt me.Not intentionally.

Isaac studied me for a long moment. Then, wordlessly, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a pen. He grabbed a napkin from the dispenser on the table and scribbled something on it before sliding it across the table to

  1. me.

That’s my number,he said. If you ever need anything, whether you just need someone to talk to or if things get bad and you need help, call me.

I stared at the napkin. The numbers were written in neat, careful handwriting. For a moment, I wasn’t sure if I should take it. I barely knew this guy, butHe was from Bloodmoon. He was close with my brother. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to have another ally, should I ever need it.

Okay,I said, folding the napkin and tucking it into my pocket. I forced another smile. Thank you.

I didn’t really plan on calling him. But I supposed it was sort of nice to know that there were always people in my corner, even those who I barely knew at all.

Andrei’s POV

I was in my office as usual, poring over paperwork, when my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out to see a message from an unknown number. There were no words on the screen. Just a picture.
