Rejected and Pregnant I Fled The Pack (Evelyn and Damon) novel Chapter 283

Then the dining room shifted the way dream rooms do, and I wasn't in the house anymore. I was in the rain, in the dark at the edge of the woods. Ethan stood in front of me with his back to me, his shoulders squared against the trees.

Three men came out of the dark, flat-faced and quiet.

"No," I said. "Ethan, run."

He didn't turn around. He didn't move. One of the men raised something that glinted, and I understood with that cold, dreadful clarity dreams give you that he was going to die for me, standing right there. I tried to run to him and my feet stuck to the mud.

"*Ethan!*"

The sound that tore out of me was real.

I came awake screaming.

For a second I didn't know where I was. The room was dark and the quilt was tangled around my legs. I was gasping, my heart hammering so hard it hurt, and I scrambled backward until my shoulders hit the headboard, one arm thrown up in front of my face.

The door crashed open.

He didn't flip on the lights. I realized later that he'd known not to. He came in low and fast, a dark shape against the dim hallway, and stopped about three feet from the bed with both hands raised, palms open.

"Marissa," he said. "It's Ethan. You're in the guest room. You're at Cross Pack. You're safe."

I couldn't speak. I was shaking so hard the whole bed trembled.

"I'm going to stay right here," he said. His voice was low and even, and it was the voice from the rain. "I won't come any closer unless you tell me to. Can you tell me where you are?"

"I'm—" It came out as a croak. "Crosspack."

"Good. Do you know who I am?"

"Ethan." I dragged a breath. "Ethan Cross."
