Emma just raised an indifferent eyebrow. On the other end, Jocelyn answered the phone, and Lydia spun around, immediately playing the victim.

"This friend of yours has zero manners! It's bad enough she didn't even greet me properly, but she actually had the nerve to suggest Jared join your family, or that you could just dump him and find another man!"

Jared immediately spoke into the phone, "Mom, did you say something you shouldn't have and piss Emma off? Don't antagonize her. Just do exactly what she tells you to do."

His total lack of support made Lydia explode with furious embarrassment.

"I am your mother! For her to be so incredibly rude to me means she clearly has zero respect for you!"

Seeing that the woman was gearing up for a full-blown tantrum, Jocelyn coldly hung up.

She didn't even have to say a word; Jared immediately dialed Emma's number.

Emma raised an eyebrow at Lydia, answering the phone right to her face and throwing it on speaker.

"Emma, thank you so much for dealing with today. I'm rushing back to Capital City right now. Please don't let her get to you. I'll handle this. I am so incredibly sorry."

Jared was incredibly polite. He knew exactly what his family was like. If he hadn't been absolutely bogged down helping Jocelyn, he never would have asked Emma to pick them up.

Emma raised an eyebrow and replied with a smile, "I'm not mad. I'll get them settled at the hotel. The banquet hall is already fully booked as well."

"I'm so sorry for being such a massive burden."

Emma didn't say anything more. She hung up the phone and looked right at Lydia.

"An engagement is supposed to be a joyous occasion. Let's not make things miserable for each other. Be smart about this."

With that, she got into the car. Jeff practically forced Lydia onto the bus. The entire crowd was craning their necks to stare at her, making her face burn with humiliation.

Emma settled back into her seat. Carter hesitated for a long while before finally probing cautiously.
