Norah’s POV

“Lucien, you killed our child that day. The day of your grand, society wedding to Amélie. The
day you put a ring on her finger and accepted the world’s congratulations.”
I said it flatly. No emotion. Just a cold, hard fact.
“You… what did you just say?” His voice shook, each word fighting its way out.
“I said the baby is gone. I lost it.”
I watched the blood drain from his face.
“After the ceremony, Amélie came to gloat. She didn’t just ruin my hand. She took the baby, too.”
“I was alone on the cold floor. Bleeding out.”
“I begged for you to come. To save us. But you never knew.”
“Mateo was the one who found me. Who took me to the hospital. I lay on that operating table, completely alone. No one to hold my hand.”
I took a step closer, watching the last light in his eyes gutter and die. “Are you happy now, Lucien? You killed our child. Now you’re trying to kill my career. You’ve won.”
He staggered back, colliding with the desk. Files scattered across the floor.
His hand lifted, trembling, as if to touch me. It hung in the air between us.
What right did he have to touch me now?
Good.He needed to believe the child was dead by his hand. He needed to carry that guilt, that sin. Only then would he let go. Only then would my children be safe.
“Norah…” His voice was shattered.
I turned my back on him. “Get out.”
He walked out of the studio like a ghost. Empty. A man with no soul left.
Irina and Katarina arrived at the entrance just as he was leaving. They saw him stumble out.
“Ah-!”

A raw, broken roar tore from his throat. His fist slammed into the doorframe with a sickening crack. Then he was gone.
The girls rushed in. Irina took one look at me and pulled me into a fierce, protective hug. “He’s lost his mind, Norah. You can’t see him. Not now.”
I leaned into her shoulder, silent. Tears fell without a sound.
I had won. With one vicious lie, I had broken him.
So why did my heart feel as dead as his looked?
He didn’t come back for days, but a heavy tension lingered in the studio. I buried myself in work, using frantic busyness to numb the hollow ache in my chest.
On the third afternoon, he returned.
“Boss, he’s… he’s here. Downstairs.” The new assistant rushed into my office, pale and breathless.
I walked to the window. His car was parked at the curb. The door opened, and he stepped out. He looked like a walking corpse–pale, hollow–eyed, devoid of all vitality.
My staff moved to block the door. Irina and Katarina exchanged a glance and went down to meet him.
Irina stood with her arms crossed, a living barricade. “What do you want now, Constantine? Haven’t you done enough?”
He ignored her. His gaze was fixed past her, up toward where I stood, as if he could see me through the walls. “Norah,” he called out, his voice rough and raw. “Let me in.”
“On what grounds?” Katarina’s laugh was sharp and cold. “So you can hurt her some more? You’re quite the expert at that.”
He said nothing else. After a long moment, I heard his car drive away.
It became a daily ritual after that. Rain or shine, he would come. Sometimes with pastries I used to like, sometimes with absurdly expensive health tonics. Sometimes he just stood silently downstairs for hours.
Irina and Katarina returned every offering untouched, or tossed it into the trash right in front of him.
I never went down. But I watched from behind the curtains every time, my heart twisting as I saw his assistant help his unsteady frame back into the car.

No. I can’t soften. I have to make him give up for good.
A few days later, an invitation appeared on my desk. From the Cappe family.

“A ‘creative retreat“?” Irina snatched the letter, her eyes scanning it angrily. “This isn’t a retreat. It’s a gilded cage!”
