"That wretched girl! That wretched girl!" His voice trembled with fury.
Nora had been quiet the whole time, not even jumping in when Gabriel was being repeatedly rebuffed.
Now, seeing him consumed by anger, she finally spoke. "After all this, you should see clearly now. Queena is your only true daughter!"
Catching her mother's hint, Queena felt a wave of distaste.
It was one thing in the past, when she and her mother had to rely on Gabriel for everything, constantly vying for his favor. But now, she had her own career. Gabriel was the one who needed her. Why should she still have to flatter him?
But she still said aloud, "Dad, don't worry. You still have me."
Still reeling from Anastasia's insults, Gabriel was deeply moved by Queena's comforting words.
He looked at her with satisfaction. "That's right. Queena is my good daughter."
After leaving the restaurant, Anastasia was about to hail a cab when she noticed a commotion nearby. A crowd had gathered, and there was a lot of shouting.
Curiosity must be human nature. Before her mind could even make a decision, her feet were already carrying her toward the crowd.
As she got closer, she saw an overturned rental bike on the side of the road. An old man was sitting on the ground, wailing dramatically, while a slender teenage boy stood beside him.
The boy was in a school uniform, clutching a dusty backpack, his lips an unhealthy pale. Wasn't that Susan's younger son, Carter?!
Anastasia was surprised to see him here. Hadn't she heard that Susan kept a very tight leash on him? Why was he out here all alone? And on a rental bike, no less...
Seeing how young Carter was, she tried to intimidate him further. "You look like a student, don't you? Right now, the old man is only asking for money, he hasn't called the police. If you don't pay up, you'll have to explain it to them!"
"I hear that when you kids get in trouble, it goes on some kind of record, right? You won't be able to get into a good college or find a good job!"
Anastasia glanced at the woman and noticed her subtly exchanging glances with the old man on the ground.
...It was obvious. Carter was being scammed.
She looked around and, sure enough, they were in a blind spot for the security cameras.
Considering the relationship between Susan and Harrison, she was tempted to stay out of it. But seeing the slender boy surrounded by the crowd, looking so isolated and helpless, she sighed and stepped forward.
