Timothy didn't deny it. He simply said, "So what if I have?"
Serena looked up, her eyes shimmering with tears. "But I'm your fiancée."
Timothy said, "That can be changed very quickly."
Before Serena could say more, he lost his patience, glanced at his phone, and said dismissively, "I have things to do. If there's nothing else, you can leave."
Serena left.
Timothy picked up his call.
"...We've hit a dead end," the person on the other end reported, updating him on a recent matter. "The Lancaster Group hired someone really good. I'm no match for them. As long as he's involved, we probably can't make any more moves against them."
"Someone really good?" Timothy asked. "Didn't you confidently swear to me before that no one was better than you in this field?"
"I was confident before, but I never expected Sonder to get involved." The person on the other end was clearly a hacker, now sounding both ashamed and furious—furious at Sonder for ruining things, of course. He wouldn't dare be angry with Timothy.
"Sonder has a huge reputation. Everyone knows how skilled he is, but he never gets involved in these things and always rejects recruitment offers. I thought this time was a sure thing. Who knew he'd actually help the Lancaster Group!"
Timothy had no patience for excuses; he only wanted results.
His voice was soft, but it carried a chilling danger. "So what you're saying is, I spent all that money to hire a useless fool?"
The hacker on the other end felt his scalp tingle. "There is another way!" he said hastily.
"Oh? And what way is that?"
"Unlikely," Logan said, his tone heavy. "If something urgent came up, Sonder would have let us know in advance. This sort of sudden disappearance has never happened before."
"I figured since you and Sonder are friends, you might have another way to contact him?"
Anastasia felt a surge of worry. "I'll try."
After hanging up, she immediately sent a message to Sonder, but just as Logan had said, there was no response.
She remembered a similar situation a while back. Though he did reply then, it was after a long delay, and he had seemed unwell.
So what was it this time? Was he just held up, or had something happened to him?
While praying it was the former, she acted swiftly, ordering her people to investigate Sonder's identity.
