But whatever she was planning, he had no interest in playing along.
Carter might have ignored her, but Susan wasn't one to give up easily. She decided to go to the Lancaster estate directly.
She arrived just as Marina was also visiting—specifically to ask Carter for his help. After the incident with the actress, Marina was well aware of Carter's capabilities. As she grew more comfortable around him, her initial reservations faded. This time, when she needed help with a similar issue, she thought of him first.
“It's nothing too demanding,” Marina was explaining. “Just helping out the PR department now and then. When someone targets the studio online, your job would be to identify who's behind it. The rest will be handled by the team. I heard from Harrison that you're also a consultant for the Lancaster Group now, is that right? Don't worry, the salary we offer won't be any less than what they're paying you.”
“I don't need a salary,” Carter said, shaking his head shyly.
“Of course you do,” Marina laughed. “You're not even an adult yet. I'm already bending the rules by employing a minor; not paying you would be outright exploitation.”
Carter was suddenly at a loss for words. He wasn't normally tongue-tied, but something about being around Marina and Harrison always made him a little nervous.
Anastasia stood by with a smile, enjoying the rare sight of him looking so flustered and choosing not to intervene.
Just then, Susan got out of her car and saw the scene—Marina smiling warmly, and Carter looking up at her with an expression of unmistakable admiration. A jolt of panic shot through her. “—Carter!” she called out sharply.
Hearing her voice, all three turned, their pleasant expressions instantly vanishing.
Susan hurried over, grabbed Carter's arm to pull him behind her, and faced Marina with a wary, defensive look. “Mrs. Lancaster, I know I was foolish in the past, but the child is innocent…”
“Carter, are you still angry with me? Mommy knows she was wrong, and I'm apologizing. I'll take good care of you from now on, so please don't be stubborn.”
When Carter remained unmoved, her patience snapped. “Why are you being so difficult?” she blurted out. “A place like the Lancaster estate… is that really somewhere an illegitimate child like you belongs—”
“Susan!” Anastasia's voice cracked like a whip, her eyes blazing with undisguised disgust.
“Anyone in the world can point to that stain on Carter's identity, but you can't! Did he ask to be born illegitimate? Isn't this the consequence of *your* sin?”
“You're the one who made the mistake that gave him this life! You should be the one living in shame! How dare you—how could you have the heart to say that to him?!”
