"You've been interested in Susan lately, haven't you? I had him keep an eye on her," Harrison said.
"Hubby, I love you so much!"
This news was critical. She felt this was the breakthrough she was looking for.
"Is that so?" On the other end of the line, Harrison leaned back in his office chair and loosened his tie. His tone was cool. "I was under the impression you were in love with Susan."
Anastasia could hear the resentment in his voice and quickly defended herself. "Of course not. I was just paying a little more attention to her lately..."
She caught herself and grinned. "I'll come see you at the office right now!"
Harrison, finally mollified, hung up.
Soon after, Anastasia received a detailed report. She opened it and couldn't help but be shocked.
Susan and the doctor who had issued her diagnosis were indeed old classmates, and he had been infatuated with her for years. Even though he was married now, Susan was still the one that got away.
So, he had agreed to help Susan falsify the records—the miscarriage report was a fake.
Susan's choice of venue for their meeting had been premeditated. The closest hospital was that private clinic, ensuring that after her fall, she would be taken directly to her old classmate.
Reading through it, Anastasia quickly grasped the key point.
The miscarriage was a fake? Why fake it? Was it because Susan hadn't miscarried, or—had she never been pregnant at all?
The thought had barely formed when she heard a commotion downstairs.
She stepped out of the study and asked a maid, "What's going on?"
"Mr. Ryan is back!" the maid replied.
But no matter how harsh his words were, Ryan was still his son. Now that he was here, repentant and asking to come home, he couldn't find it in his heart to refuse.
"You can come back, but you are never to see that woman again! And while Carter is fine—he has Lancaster blood, after all—her other two children have nothing to do with this family. You are not to have anything to do with them either!"
Ryan said, "...Alright."
The old man's expression softened. He told the staff to prepare a room, signifying his consent for Ryan's return.
Lady Lancaster burst into tears, hugging Ryan. "I told you so many times, but you wouldn't listen. Now you see, don't you? That woman is nothing but trouble! Thank God you've finally come to your senses. Remember what you promised your father—you will never see her again!"
Just as she finished speaking, a maid rushed in to report that Susan was outside, kneeling and begging to see Ryan.
The faces of the two elders immediately darkened.
