An hour later, Joanna was ready. She had washed the worst of the grime off in the spring, strapped her sickle to her hip, and eaten something that tasted like nothing. Now she stood at the gate with her team gathered around her in the dark, faces shadowed, weapons checked and rechecked. Nobody joke Even Fletcher kept his mouth shut..
Night had settled over the valley, cold and clear, with a thin moon silvering the ridgelines. Behind them, the base glowed with lantern light and the distant clang of repairs. Levi stood on the wall above, ging a short nod. Hold it, Joanna thought at him. He saluted.
“Everyone in,” she said.
One by one she pulled them into her space: Julian, Briggs, Fletcher, Glacier, Allen, Jake, Kailee, Jolie, Will, RJ, Caleb. Then she turned to the dark ridges, took a breath, and jumped. The world blinked past in black and silver, rock and shadow, and two hops later her boots touched down on the far side of the second ridge. She released her team into the cold, and they spread out silently, crouching low among the boulders.
She already knew what to expect. Caleb had followed their threads and told her where to look. Dante had spent the last day circling above the camp and relayed every detail through Raven, until the picture in Joanna’s head was sharp enough to draw.
Below them, a shallow canyon cut into the mountainside, its walls pocked with caves. There were perhaps a dozen openings, some wide enough to drive a truck through, others little more than cracks. Hidden fires burned deep inside them, their glow muted by hanging tarps of dark canvas that swallowed the light. That explained why Dante had seen no smoke. Everything about the place was built to be unseen.
Outside the larger caves sat the evidence of what these people did. Rows of folding tables stood under camouflage netting, crowded with glass flasks, coiled tubing, and dented pressure cookers. Barrels lay stacked along the canyon wall, some stenciled with chemical warnings, others filled with sap and pale, heaped mushrooms. Racks of small glass vials, the same kind as the perfume bottle, glittered faintly in the moonlight. A thin, sweet, chemical smell drifted up the slope, and Joanna’s nose wrinkled. Pheromone.
Figures moved through the camp in a state of controlled panic. There were maybe sixty of them, thin and pale from months of living underground, wearing mismatched lab coats and stained coveralls. Some hauled crates toward a line of packed carts. Others argued in sharp whispers, pointing toward the ridge where the swarm had died. A woman cradled a case of vials against her chest like a child. A man kept looking over his shoulder, as if the dark itself might come for him.
Only a handful stood apart. Caleb had counted nine ability users. Joanna picked them out now: two men with rifles and an unnatural stillness, a woman whose hands shimmered faintly as she tested the air, a pair of guards at the canyon mouth who never seemed to blink.
And at the center of it all, outside the largest cave, stood a tall man with a close-cropped beard, directing the chaos with sharp, clipped gestures. Even from this distance, Joanna knew the set of his shoulders.
Shane.
Her hand settled on the hilt of her sickle. Beside her, Julian’s fingers began to crackle with a faint blue light.

“That’s them,” Caleb whispered.
“Then let’s finish it,” Joanna said.

Joanna raised one hand, and her team scattered into the dark like water finding cracks in stone Se counted to three in her head. On three, she blinked.
She landed behind the two guards at the canyon mouth. Her sickle took the first before he finishe turning. The second managed half a shout before Julian’s lightning hit him from the ridge above, ingle white crack that lit the whole canyon like a flashbulb.
Then there was no more silence.
“INTRUDERS!” someone screamed. “THE DEMONESS! IT’S THE DEMONESS!”
