Jiang Cheng walked away with a bowl of wine and joined the table of old farmers eating and drinking. She was once again that person who could chat from the fields to the negotiation table.
After a few rounds of drinks, Jiang Cheng, not the least bit tipsy, saw off each of the older men who had overindulged.
After most people had left, Uncle Zhang came over.
Jiang Cheng instantly became the obedient junior, respectfully looking at Uncle Zhang and asking, "Did you not drink?"
"No, I didn’t. If everyone drinks too much, who’s going to take care of things?"
Jiang Cheng immediately praised him with a thumbs-up, saying, "It has to be my Uncle Zhang looking at the bigger picture, thinking things through thoroughly."
Uncle Zhang waved his hand knowingly and said, "Come on now, don’t try to flatter me too much."
"I can’t let that happen, I have to make my Uncle Zhang happy."
Jiang Cheng’s words made Uncle Zhang laugh, but he worriedly asked, "Drinking that much, are you okay?"
"Don’t worry, I can handle a thousand cups without getting drunk."
Uncle Zhang, assured that Jiang Cheng was really okay, earnestly said, "Don’t worry, about growing the seasonings, I’ll definitely take care of it for you. Even if I go, I’ll find someone honest and reliable."
"It’s not that I’m biased towards you, Uncle Zhang, it’s for the benefit of the villagers. I have my own selfish reasons."
Uncle Zhang spoke candidly. He knew Jiang Cheng chose their village, partly to give him some consideration. People shouldn’t be ungrateful.
"Uncle Zhang, I trust you!"
"And if it weren’t for you pulling some strings and taking us to so many places, we wouldn’t have resolved the raw material supply for our factory so quickly."
Uncle Zhang waved his hand, unconcerned. As an elder, how could he not help when the younger ones needed it?
After they finished talking, Jiang Cheng accompanied Uncle Zhang for a walk around the village, her original hometown.
When they passed by the Jiang family home, Old Mrs. Jiang, upon seeing Jiang Cheng, slammed the door shut with a bang, too afraid to come out.
"Seems like this Old Mrs. Jiang has been subdued by you."
"It’s not submission, just recognizing that she can’t oppose me."
Uncle Zhang, upon hearing this, realized it was exactly the truth.
The two continued walking. Upon reaching Uncle Zhang’s home, Jiang Cheng stayed for a while, took some wild produce he gave her, and returned to S City.
Upon arriving in S City, Jiang Cheng didn’t rush to go back to Beijing.
She drove herself to the night school to visit Principal Wang first.
After the car stopped at the night school entrance, Jiang Cheng carried familiar snacks and knocked on the glass of the night school gatehouse.
Inside, Uncle Wang, who was nodding off a bit, looked up, blinked again and again.
"Jiang Cheng!"
"Uncle Wang, did you miss me?"
Uncle Wang truly slapped his thigh and stood up, fussing with the door a couple of times before getting it open.
"When did you get back?"
"Just got back, and came to see you."
Jiang Cheng, carrying the snacks, entered the gatehouse and chatted with Uncle Wang for a while.
"Alright, no need to stay with an old man like me. I saw Principal Wang peeking from the window."
Jiang Cheng looked up and saw Principal Wang, closing the window, hiding behind the wall.
"Alright, I’m heading upstairs."
Uncle Wang, smiling, showed his rare grin with one missing front tooth, watching Jiang Cheng as she went up the new teaching building.
Yes, it was a new teaching building.
After she started doing business, Jiang Cheng openly donated funds to the night school, expanded the teaching building, allowing Principal Wang to enroll more students.
With the annual training classes for college entrance exams, the night school was now quite profitable.
Jiang Cheng walked to the office and knocked on the door formally.
Inside, Principal Wang tried several postures and finally, pretentiously called out: "Come in."
Jiang Cheng stifled a laugh, holding it back as she opened the door.
Principal Wang was getting on in years, a bit of flattery couldn’t hurt.
