Yun Zijin had just finished pulling her things out when she heard a knock on the door.
’Who would be looking for her at this hour?’
Yun Zijin’s brows furrowed slightly. She had a bad feeling about this.
But the person knocking outside seemed determined not to give up until she opened the door, rapping three times every few moments.
Yun Zijin grabbed a baseball bat and peered through the peephole. She could only tell that it was a man outside; the peephole was angled too high to see his face, showing only the area around his collarbone.
Yun Zijin stepped back from the door, pulled out her phone, and called the community’s security guard.
"Uncle, there’s someone knocking on my door, but they’re not saying anything. Could you bring a few guys and some gear over to check things out?"
On the other end of the line, the guard quickly agreed. After hanging up, he started rounding people up.
Since the person wasn’t banging on the door violently, Yun Zijin initially guessed he didn’t have any malicious intent. But it was better to be safe than sorry, so she had still asked the guard to bring backup and gear.
「About ten minutes later.」
"Who are you! What are you doing here?"
Inside her apartment, hearing the guard’s voice, Yun Zijin thought it was the most beautiful sound she’d ever heard.
"I’m Xia Zhiyun, the general manager of the Xia Group. I’m here to find someone."
"Who are you looking for? What’s it about?"
"Yun Zijin. It’s a private matter."
Hearing that it was a private matter, the guard frowned but still thought it was best to have Yun Zijin come out and handle it herself.
"Zijin, my girl, I’m out here with a few other guards. You’re safe. Come on out and see what’s going on."
Xia Zhiyun: ’So she didn’t open the door this whole time because she thought I was a bad guy?’
With familiar faces around, Yun Zijin wasn’t as scared anymore. She grabbed her bag, opened the door, and stepped out herself, not letting anyone inside.
"What’s this about? Go ahead and say it."
"I heard that Miss Yun is an orphan?"
Yun Zijin frowned. ’What does being an orphan have to do with him?’
"Just say what you have to say. Don’t beat around the bush."
"That’s right! We don’t have time for your fancy, roundabout talk."
The guard chimed in from the side.
"I suspect... that you’re my biological sister. So... would you be willing to do a DNA test with me?"
Xia Zhiyun’s words made Yun Zijin finally look up and meet his gaze. "It’s been twenty-one years. There’s no need for that, is there?"
For as long as she could remember, Yun Zijin had lived in an orphanage.
When she was little, she yearned for her parents to find her, but she eventually gave up hope.
Her parents were secondary; her own happiness was what mattered most.
"I know you’ve been donating to your orphanage, no less than 2,000 yuan a month."
"But because of that, your own life is very tight. After rent and utilities, you barely have anything left over each month."
"The Xia Family is one of the most prominent wealthy families in Dijing. If the DNA test proves you’re my biological sister, you’ll be the young lady of the Xia Family. Your monthly allowance alone would be more than enough to cover all the orphanage’s expenses."
"Do you still think it’s unnecessary?"
If this had happened before she encountered Randomly Spend, she might have been tempted. But now, she could just open her phone and see the four million yuan balance sitting in her account. Yun Zijin wasn’t nearly as moved.
"Why would you suspect I’m your biological sister?"
’There’s no way he’d suspect something like this for no reason.’
